DuPont State Forest
closes temporarily
By Aia Andonovska
Arts & Life Editor
As of March 24, DuPont State Recreational
Forest is temporarily closed to the general
public. This decision came after many
other public lands, including DuPont, were
flooded with people from out of state and in
state. People were not following the social
distancing guidelines to stay six feet apart,
and because of this, access to the public land
has been revoked for the time being.
The NC Forest Service did not take this action
lightly, as they have stated so themselves. The
land is for everyone, but in times like these,
it is crucial that everyone does their part to
contain the spread of the virus. This closure

includes all trailheads and forest
facilities. Parking areas have been
barricaded for public safety as well.
“Closing state forests to the
public is a decision I do not take
lightly, and much consideration
has been given to this decision,”
said Agriculture Commissioner
Steve Troxler. “The bottom line is
that these sites are beautiful and
treasured places in our state where
families and visitors can make
positive, lasting memories. These
state forests have experienced
what many state parks and beaches
have, too—^unsafe and overcrowded
conditions that tax these resources.
This temporary closure to the public
is necessary, but rest assured, it is
temporary.”
During this time of turmoil, please
be considerate to others by making
the right decision, which is to stay at home. Too
many people have not fully understood what
social distancing actually means, and flocked
to the beautiful outdoors and mountains that are
found here locally. By coming from different
states, they could potentially be spreading the
virus unknowingly.

Another concern for residents of the North
Carolina mountains are the resources that
are being depleted by outsiders and that the
hospital infrastructure here is not developed
enough to support a lot of sick people. Take
care of yourself and exercise, but make sure
to do it six feet apart!

Thank you, Zach, and all your colleagues for
continuing to publish The Clarion during this
unique time in the life of our college.
Every day has brought new challenges—and
more often than I care to count, the necessity
to override some decisions that were made the
day before. We are entering a time for which
there is no real “playbook.”
Nevertheless, The Clarion is serving well
as a means to stay connected to our campus
family and to remind us that all of us are
in this together. I am confident that we will
“weather the storm” and emerge a better place
and a closer community.
Your faculty and staff have focused their
efforts and energies to ensure that we complete
this semester, prepare for the next and live
up to our mission to provide “an experiential
liberal arts education that encourages personal
growth and inspires artistic, intellectual, and
social action.”
We certainly are living in a difficult time.
The Clarion is a wonderful reminder that “this
too shall pass.”
Again, thank you. —DJ
