Page 8 Hilarion The Clarion \ April 1,2020 A look back (and down...) As we continue to live day by day duirng this unprecedented time in our history, The Hilarion (and Clarion) staff offer this glimpse from the past before we had to adhere to a state-mandated stay-at-home order and practice proper “social distancing” guidelines. This photo shows an aerial view of Brevard College’s commencement ceremony in May 2018 in the Betty Neale Academic Quadrange near the bell tower on campus. At the bottom of the picture (in front of McLarty-Goodson) is the platform where graduates walk to receive their diplomas, and that year’s graduates is the rectangular, mostly black block spanning the brickwork. (Faculty and staff can be seen at an angle at the bottom left.) The spots of color amid all that black come from the academic regalia, especially the hoods worn by graduates and faculty alike. With the postponement of this spring’s commencement because of the coronavirus pandemic, we thought our readers, especially our graduating seniors, might like to get a “bird’s-eye-view” of what to expect when the ceremony is re-scheduled. Prez Continued from page 5 Chance, a dog candidate, run? Many nave criticized Chance for running for president, but just one look at that adorable face and they will for sure change their minds. With the number of jokes people make about politicians being dogs, it was about time one actually ran for president. Plus, Chance does have former experience in politics. He was the former mayor of his town Oakdale, Texas. He left his old position to move on to more ambitious goals such as president. Many people have questioned what political party Chance will run in. Chance has decided to become a nonpartisan, which is a good thing. If he ran as a Democrat or a Republican, one party might have a clear advantage over the other. Many people can’t wait to see how it ends up. Maybe the United States will be the first Mascot country to have a dog president. We will just have to wait and see while crossing our fingers for the best. Continued from page 5 You can vote for any one of these options. You can find a slip of paper in Campus Life, at the front desk. This is an anonymous entry. Entries will be held until the end of the day, on April 1st, by 11:55 p.m. If you cannot make it to the voting, you can have a trusted friend to vote for you. This has been a long time coming, and it was a difficult decision to make. Brevard College’s administration wanted to have a fresh new start. The inspiration has always been in front of us. The new improvement gives Brevard College a more “nature-focused” appearance, since it has one of the best outdoor wilderness programs in the state. Not only does the college want to encourage nature lovers to expand their minds, but also to match the environment around campus. More representation of wildlife around us may influence humans to better take rare of the world around them.
