PASTOR CALLS FOR EXECUTIONS OF GAYS

WATERTOWN, NY—The emergence of gay
activism in a small town in upstate
New York has resulted in violence,
:harassment, death threats, fire bomb- ,
ings and a call for the execution of
local homosexuals,
Watertown, a factory community of •
30,000, recently saw the establish
ment of a gay advocacy group, the
Watertown Gay Task Force. This
prompted an anti-gay backlash cam
paign by the Rev. Daniel Lovely of
Watertown Baptist Temple.
According to the Task Force
president Pat Tanner, the "God Says
Death to Homos".campaign begun by
Lovely prompted more violence and
harassment. It included the severe
beating of one woman.
Lovely was, quoted in the local
newspapers'as saying that the execu
tion of homosexuals is justified,
"They should be killed through
governmental means," Lovely said,
"there are a lot of people in Water-
town that enjoy living in a non-
Christian world, and it*s got to
be stopped."

BROWN APPOINTS GAY JUDGE
California Gov, Jerry Brown has
named an openly gay man to a judge-
ship in Los Angeles. , ‘ '
Stephen M, Lachs, 39, was /‘ap
pointed. to a full judgeship on the
Los Angeles Superior Court on
Sept. 17,■
Lachs has said he dislikes his

media label as "an avowed homo
sexual because it is suggestive
of taking oaths or vows'at,mid
night," According.to' the National
Committee for Sexual Civil Liber
ties, this is the first occasion
in which an openly gay person has
been appointed to a judgeship any
where in the United States.
MIZ LILLIAN ’UNKNOWINGLY* RAISES
MONEY FOR CENTER
California Gov, Jerry Brown and
Lillian Carter, the President’s mother,
joined a crowd of about 850 at a ban
quet that raised $120,000 for the
Los Angeles .jgay community at the
Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly
Hills. Miss Lillian said she didn't
know she was helping raise money for
the Gay Community Services Center,
according to Gay Community News,
"Is that what it is?" she asked.
MAN/BOY'LOVE GROUP SEEKS ACCEPTANCE
IN GAY MOVEMENT:
The North American Man/Boy Love
Association, with a national membership
of 150, is for men who enter into love
relationships with boys,
"It is somewhat similar to the an
cient Greek tradition of the pedagogue,
the adult whose love would provide a
youth with a role model and socializing
influence as he prepared to accept his
place in society," a spokesperson said,
"Rather than restricting this relatio;
ship to a societal purpose, however,
NAMBLA members celebrate their love for
its own sake, stressing the qualities o
frankness, trustworthiness, openness,
caring, imagination and llghtheartednes
which form the basis of the man/boy
love identity,"
One problem, which is high on NAMBLA
list of priorities, is the need for ac
ceptance within the gay movement and
solidarity in the pursuit of sexual
freedom for all gay men and lesbians.
Approximately 50 men and boys and on
woman marched in the NAMBLA delegation ~
as part of the National March on Wash
ington for Lesbian and Gay Rights.
REPRESENTATIVES MEET WITH CARTER
ADMINISTRATION
On Oct, 15 representatives of the.
National March on Washington organiz
ing committee and representatives of
other gay organizations met with Jane
Wales, President Carter's special ad
visor on special interest groups.
TViey also met with other administra
tive assistants, including an aide to
Vice Pres. Mondale. .
Beverly Jackson, a black lesbian
mother from Florida, and Eric Rofes, a
gay school teacher from Boston, pre-*
sented the five official demands of
the March, Rofes-said that, "Gay prid
can turn into gay politics," and urged
the President to"address such-issues
as the anti-gay McDonald resolution
and the harassment of gay aliens.
Other gay spokespersons addressed
diverse.issues ranging from homophobic
discrimination in federal housing assi
tance to the matter of Library of Con
gress censorship of reading materials
in Braille, This censorship leaves
most books about gay liberation inac
cessible to the blind.
"The upcoming presidential electior
was discussed, and the White House
received the message that gay votes
would have to be earned," a spokesper
son said.
The White House had no answers for
the points raised, but Rofes said that
"the two-hour meeting’s greatest valut
may have been the chance to express
dissatisfaction with a presidency that
is out of touch with the gay community
