Live From Durham It’s the Miss Bolinwood Pageant 14 What started out four years ago as a small get-together among friends has turned into a major event, attracting people from all over N.C. Yet, just when you thought it was safe to go back to a drag show. Miss Bolinwood rolls back into t own. The Miss Bolinwood Pageant, where "hoot and female impersonation meet head-on" has made another appearance upon the Chapel Hill social scene, and all involved, be they participants or spectators, agree that this pageant was a tremendous success. Begun back in 1981 by a group of "Carolina Girls," the Miss Bolinwood Pageant takes its name from the apartment complex where most of the girls lived. In the first show, the contestants wore sheets and towels, but proved they knew how to have a good time. So the Miss Bolinwood became a semi-annual event, with both Sun Fun Contests and Winter Frolics ATTENTION Gentle readers: Thank you very much for your responses to our Lambda survey in our last issue. The responses are still coming in! We appreciate your taking the time to respond and are making notes on all your criticisms and suggestions. If you didn't return the survey but would like your voice heard, there's still time. Here's what to do: Find the February/March issue of Lambda, fill out the back page and mail it back to us. Or come by our office (230 Carolina Union) and ask for a copy of the survey form. When You Care Enough to Send the Very Best Fineline Cards, a line of high quality full-color greetings cards and notecards, "for Lesbian women, by Lesbian women," is now being sold in gay and lesbian stores across the United States. The creators say their cards are "for today's Lesbian woman. All of the cards are images of Lesbian women, photographed through a women's eye." The images touch on different and varied interests, covering a realm of personalities, always keeping in consider ation that not all lesbians are the same and, therefore, not discriminating against any lesbian lifestyle. Dealer inquiries are welcome. Contact: Fineline Cards 2315 East Olympic Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90021 Contests. Subsequent shows have become more polished and better planned, with everyone in full drag, but everyone still has a good time. This year's Winter Frolics Pageant was held at the Power Company of Durham on Feb. 23. Beginning at 10 p.m., the two and one-half hour pageant featured a score of guest entertainers and featured six contestants: Holly Marie, Wanita May Walker, Melinda Le Grand, Miss Beverly Horne Price, Taylor Stanton, and Aileen Hoo Hoo. The Mistresses of Ceremonies were Daisy Mack, Dena Davis, and Sissy Stolichnaya. When all was done, Aileen Hoo Hoo became the new Miss Bolinwood Winter Frolics 1985, with Miss Beverly Horne Price being the first runner up and Melinda Le Grand coming in as the second runner up.
