P J (ROBERT’S LETTER continued from page And it’s quite necessary for our social, spiritual, and political advancement. If we don’t come out we can neither realis tically expect to develop positive atti tudes about ourselves nor expect to instill those attitudes in our families, friends, ministers, coworkers, teachers, students, classmates, and acquaintances, who very well might carry their good opinions of gay people into the voting booth. After coming out, I strongly believe that one should become actively invovled with some vibrant, well-organized, world- class, gay/lesbian organization, such ast eh Carolina Gay and Lesbian Association. "Faith without works is dead," said Paul, Peter, Mary, or Jesus. My Bible knowledge is obviously not all that it should be, but I do know that our foes are out- organizing, out-spending, and generally out-distancing us in this battle to decide what our lives and the world will be like. We cannot afford to sit idly by and talk about our other commitments and what we simply cannot and will not do, while our enemies are frantically working to destory everything that we’ve gained. Yes, your money and your time is needed! No, things won’t get better by themselves. Speaking of the new right (lower case on purpose!), has anyone noticed that they are getting elected to public office a bit more often than one would deem prudent? (PORNOGRAPHY, continued from page whole range of less blatantly stimulative literature will accustom the general public to the idea of the tolerability of gay erotica. As an indication of the changes which are already occurring, it is just a little short of amazing to see the proliferation of gay-oriented greeting cards in boutiques across the country, even right here in the Triangle area. Eventually we may see the proliferation of gay romantic literature and art photo graphy, currently at rather early stages of development in the hands of not always skillful practitioners. Serious, yet erotic gay movies and theatre are on the horizon too, though they have yet to liberate themselves completely from shop worn themes of gay guilt and self-hatred. If these welcome developments continue (and they could well be cut short by a general reaction against all erotica), dependence on explicit pornography might lessen, our cultural horizons would be broadened, and a modest step taken in the terribly difficult process of gaining general acceptance of our means of sexual expression. • R • Has anyone noticed that there don’t seem to be a great many OPENLY GAY (emphasis intended!) elected officials? Has anyone noticed there don’t seem to be many openly-gay people runhLng for elected office? Does anyone Taelieve—as I do— that gay people are their own best spokespersons? Does anyone believe—as I do—that if we’re going to have any real victories in the next couple of decades we’ll have to obtain and use more politi cal power? Does anyone believe—as I do— that there are a great many gay people, who are more than bright, creative, and hard-working enough to be good leaders of the gay and straight communities? If you agree with everything that I have said and you’re one of those bright, creative, and hard-working gay people that I spoke of earlier please "get political," get involved, and get elected! Enough said. Finally, to my dear felloj/ CGLAers. Remember that the organization compares favorably with every other student organi zation on campus and don’t let anyone tell you differently. Remember also, however, that we haven’t reached our full poten tial. Still, less than one-third of our members are women, and there are almost no Blacks. Remember that we’ve done some good programs this year, put out a dyna mite newsletter—thanka Kim, Jim, and Lee—and that we’ve done had some "crazy and giddy" dances. Remember that Jim has super human stamina and skill but that he needs your help—good luck, Jim; don’t burn out. And remember always that it is a great and wonderful thing to be gay and at Carolina. Thanks for helping to make CGLA something to be proud of. Goodbye and good luck. Love, Robert P.S. Also remember that the year isn’t finished yet and that there’s still work to be done. Call me if you have any extra time or even if you don’t. We have a conference to put on, you know.
