(COUNSERVATIVE OUSTER, continued from p.f)
that Torgan’s support for CGLA violated
SFA’s principles.
"I am not bitter," says Torgan. "But
they did not give me a chance to defend
myself. SFA is a conservative political
student organization, although in this
case they’ve chosen to supplant conserva
tism with bigotry and prejudice."
On Sep. 17, Torgan filed a request
with Dean of Students Frederic W.
Schroeder calling for the revocation of
SFA’s university recognition. All student
organizations must annually apply for this
status in order to operate on campus.
"For the University to deny an open
forum for First Amendment expression would
be illegal under United States Constitu
tional law," said Torgan in a letter to
Schroeder. Student organizations must
agree to follow University regulations and
federal laws. Torgan claims that SFA vio
lated his First Amendment freedom of
expression and denied him due proces by
handing down this decision without allow
ing him to defend his actions.
Dean Schroeder has denied Torgan’s
request, saying that an organization does
not become a State agency when it becomes
a University organization and that
therefore the Torgan-SFA dispute is a
private matter .
According to Fazio, the loss of three
of its five local officers will not affect
the group. "SFA will exist without them,"
he said.
All indications are that SFA will
continue to move further to the right.
Members at last January’s national SFA
meeting voted to pressure the Justice
Department to bring treason charges
against Jane Fonda for her opposition to
the Viet Nam war.
"They have closed themselves to all
but reactionary Christian zealots," Torgan
said. "Their actions will have an adverse
effect upon conservatism as a whole and
upon political discourse between groups
with other political views."
