Lesbian and Gay Pride ’86 Dear Brothers and Sisters, Glorious spring is now upon us in our part of this purple world, and I am writing to apprise you of the newer and more definite developments in our impending celebrations of the 17th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. (It is appropriate to mention here that New York City, the site of that historic event of gay and lesbian liberation, has now joined those other parts of the civilized world, including Chapel Hill, which have gay rights legislation on the books.) But on to June and the week of June 22 to 28 and local celebrations of gay and lesbian liberation. As reported here before, the week will start in Raleigh, on Sunday afternoon, June 22, with the 6th annual Gay Pride Picnic at Umstead State Park. As with other events listed herein, please check the usual spots, such as The Front Page, the Newsletter, and the CGLA bulletin board, for more details as the end of June draws nigh. Then, on Wednesday, June 25, there will be the 4th annual Stonewall Community Supper here in Chapel Hill, at 6:30 p.m., at the Community Church, near the intersection of Purefoy and Mason Farm Roads. As this issue of Lambda goes to press, a local committee is at work on the details of what we hope will be a great evening together for gay and lesbian people and our friends. We can still use new and additional ideas and hands and feet. If you have some of those, please call 929-4053 and leave a message. On Friday night, June 27, the Lesbian and Gay Health Project will sponsor a dance in Durham. The proceeds will be split between the Health Projct and the great Gay and Lesbian Pride March and Celebration to be held, also in Durham, the next day, Saturday, June 28. This last event, surely the largest (and why not the best?) demonstration of gay and lesbian liberation ever (at least so far) in our special Triangle, now far along in the planning, still needs helpers. If you want to help out—or if you just need information, please call 682-7108 in Durham and 929-4053 in Chapel Hill. Hoping to see you-all at all or most of these celebrations. Yours in liberation, /s/ Joe Herzenberg (for himself and lots of other local organizers) P.S. If you like spaghetti (and who doesn’t at this time of the year?), come to a fundraising supper for the Durham March and Celebration, to be held on Sunday, May 11, 6 to 9 p.m., at the Edison Johnson Community Room on West Murray Avenue (off North Duke Street) in Durham. The fee is $5 (more if you can afford it, less if you can’t).
