“Bent” performed April 6-8
"Bent,” a two-act drama by Martin
Sherman, will be presented on stage at
Memorial Hall on Hpril 6-8 at 8 p.m.
Set in the 1930’s, the play dramatizes
the persecution of homosexuals in Germany
during the rise of Adolph Hitler and the
Nazi Party. An estimated 600,000
homosexuals died in the German camps in
Hitler’s plan known as the Final Solution.
"Bent" focuses on Max Berber, an
opportunist whose drive for survival leads
him to use all available means to ensure
his own safety. Driven from his home town,
Max and his lover Rudi elude capture for
two years, during which time Max tries to
to get the necessary papers and tickets to
get them to safety. Eventually, however,
they are captured and put on a train to
Dachau. While on the train. Max kills
Rudi, in order to save his own life, and
then claims to be a Jew in an effort to
escape what he perceives to be worse
treatment for gays at the hands of the
Nazis.
Rudi’s murder is witnessed, however, by
Horst, an openly gay man also on the train,
whose contempt for Max eventually turns
into love. When the camp commander kills
Horst, Max tries to go on with his work,
but he realizes that his life is
meaningless. The ending is both moving and
tragic.
This award-winning play won rave reviews
in New York, with Richard Gere in the lead
role. It is directed here by UNC senior
Steve Maler, who has shown himself numerous
times in the past with his acting,
directing and producing for the UNC Lab
Theatre and PlayMakers.
The cast members are Lane Wurster as
Max, Mike Wilson as Horst, Edward
Timberlake as Rudi, Andrew Edmonson, Bobby
Wallace, and Shawn Albert.
The Human Relations and Performing Arts
Committees of the Carolina Union are proud
Steve maler 42-2935 to bring this play to
UNC in conduction with the Carolina Gay and
Lesbian Association and Lesbian and Gay
Awareness Week.
Tickets for "Bent" are now available at
the Carolina Union Box Office in the
