Oct. '9? LAMBDA Page II If she’s not here by noon, I think I’ll leave. I’m only here til tomor row morning and even though I live in a dty, this one is so dilFer- ent, and it’s not snowing here yet. I’m wearing my favorite outfit to day (just because I don’t support the beauty industry doesn’t mean I don’t care what I look like). Pale green corduroys which used to belong to Carl, my fiiend Pilar’s boyfiiend. My long-sleeved grey- blue top. The misshapen button- up purple sweater my grand mother made for my dad thirty years ago (it was misshapen then, too). I never met her, but she feels important. Her name was Miriam also. This is my serious duty outfit. I wore it my first day as a typesetter. I wear it when I go to the dentist. I wore it when I came out to my father, right be fore he died last year and I hadn’t seen him since I was 19. (He just smiled. I’m not sure if he under stood what I said. I’m not sure if he even recognized me. I’m not sure it’s important.) I wear it to feel comfortable. I wear it when I know I’ll be uncomfortable. (It’s odd to feel uncomfortable around your owm family. I’m not getting used to it.) I wore it, actually only the sweater, last December when I came to see Cynthia, sort of meanly. She had an extra ticket to see PoUini play at Carnegie Hall and sent me a frequent flier ticket. We went out to dinner with Jeremy, the man she was dating then, beforehand-1 didn’t like him. I didn’t know how to refuse. Maybe I should have. ...To be continued in the next issue. Everyone should be reg istered to vote by now, or vpill be registering soon, I am sure. (This means you, if you haven’t regis tered—^get out there and register to vote!!) So let me tell you a little about Senator Kinnaird, who should be re-elected. Senator Kinnaird has create opinions on many issues, including eduation, the environ ment (more specifically hog form ers), transportation, and public safety. She has co-sponsered the Excellent Schools Act. She has supported expansion of Smart Start, which gives children in North Carolina schools a chance to get ahead. She introduced a bill for English Proficiency in order to help overwhelmed schools. Last, Senator Kinnaird by Jennifer Poorbeugh but certainly not least, Senator Kinnaird has reduced class sizes by funding the hiring of 1,000 new teachers. North Carolina schools need this land of attention if they are to become better. On the issue of the envi ronment, Senator Kinnaird has in creased the tax credit for gifts of land to conservation groups, thus encouraging people to make gifts of land to these groups. She intro duced, and voted for, measures to clean up rivers and streams. Re lated to keeping rivers and streams clean. Senator Kinnaird has also proposed regulations of hog fac tory farms. She helped build Car- rboro’s Farmers’ Market. This market is nationally recognized. In transportation affoirs, Senator Kinnaird has pushed for reforms of the Department of Transportation, attacked DOT for wasting mmiey (specifically on $1.3 million on a driveway for a private UNC club), and called for local priorities to outweigh per sonal projects. Working for more funds for public transportation and school sidewalks. Senator Kin naird has also increased public safety with legislation on drunk driving, domestic violence, and sex and race harrassment. All of these efforts de serve our gratitude, and I can think of no better way to do that than to re-elect Senator Kinnaird. Activism continued from page 8 material are generally hidden as “Special Topics” we have no Igbt center on campus; heterosexism, if not outright homophobia, is commonplace in and out of the classroom. . . I could keep going. Not to mention that ho mosexual sex is still a “crime against nature” in North Carolina and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is legal in most of the nation. That's all kind of a bum mer, isn't it? Shouldn't we be doing something about all this? Damn right we should. Don't let it bring you down; be energized by it. The work is there. If Igbt issues aren't your thing, there's still plenty of work to be done on racism, sexism, and economic in justice. They all go hand in hand. We just need people who are will ing to do the work. Who knows? That work might turn out to be the most fun and the most educa tional thing you do in your time at Carolina. And it might give the Mother Jones list a run for its money.
