from the editor
ast semester GLBT-SA members were extremely
/busy bringing a number of special events to campus
for the community to take part in — Coming Out Week,
Transgender Awareness Week and, of course, the popular
drag show held in Memorial Hall.
The upcoming semester, however, will prove to be
equally exciting for the local LGBTIQ community. With
new leadership guiding the GLBT-SA, be sure to keep an
eye out for upcoming speakers and events guaranteed to
make the University a more affirming, more intune commu
nity to some of today’s most pressing LGBTIQ issues. For
example, we are privileged to have Judy Shephard, mother of Matthew Shephard,
coming to campus on Jan. 30, to discuss ways to make society a safer place for the
LGBTIQ community.
As for this most recent issue of LAMBDA, staff members have worked for the
past couple of months to look at intersections between sexuality and gender, espe
cially in relation to the transgender community. Whether it is looking at the negative
effects of using sexist language or examining some of the legal challenges faced by
the transgendered, this edition of LAMBDA will perhaps shed light on some of the
often marginalized issues affecting the community.
As we enter the new semester, again, I want to encourage members of the
community and their allies to get involved with GLBT-SA or to participate in its
scheduled events. After all, change only comes through action.
I also want to wish everyone a happy New Year. Who knows what 2007 will
bring for the LGBTIQ community, but I look forward to it with great optimism.
Cheers,
