For sheer fun, however, nothing beats Women Loving Women’s weekly meetings, in my not terribly humble opin ion. hat's an interesting pastime of jours'? T: “Going to Caffe Driade on Wednesdays for Queer Cof fee night, sitting outside and enjoying some good com pany.” C: “Drag and other cosmme-based performance art. I make my own costumes and wigs.” here do you get jour news? T: “The New York Times; NPR.” C: “Mosdy online sources - New York Times, CNN and Wikipedia.” Jf you were going to design a pride flag, what would it look like? T: “It would have a picture of every type of person - bears, lipstick lesbians, frat guys, leather daddies, butch women, transgendered individuals, blondes, rock stars ... everyone.” C: “I would stick with the basic rainbow. If I were to add anything, I would have to add so much symbolism that no one would understand the resulting mess. ’ What is the greatest challenge facing the LGBTIQ community? T: “ Internalized oppression. It amazes me how many LGBTIQ individuals say ‘that’s so gay,’ or women prefer to be called ‘you guys.’ Many don’t realize the consequences that such language has for society as a whole.” C: “Diversity. The LGBTIQ community needs to come to terms with its own internal diversity of gender, race, class, age and opinion. There is a temptation facing every social movement when it gets big enough to make change, to say that there is one basic ideology that everyone should agree with. I feel that the future of the LGBTIQ community depends on resisting that temptation.” Didyou vote in the most recent elections? T: “Of course; did you?’ C: “Yes; early.” hat is the greatest challenge facing the GLBT-SA? T: “Every semester we lose a lot of institutional knowledge that disappears when board members graduate. I’d like us to continue having every board member create a folder with the full ‘ins and outs’ of their positions to be passed onto their successors.” C: “I think the greatest challenge we have to face is knowledge-sharing. As an organization that needs its board members to have specialized knowledge and connections, turnover is a particular problem for us. We’ve had problems in the past when incredibly skilled leaders graduated or went abroad without sharing their knowledge. This makes for a steep learning curve and makes it hard to get new people interested in leading the organization.” faife 'ew more: Favorite book?
