10 LAMBDXfeatures our classes ... you should absolutely take at UNC compi led by Win Cb esson an d Marij Beth K aneMides 1 WMST 124/SOCI124 — Sex and Gender in Society ^ This course changed my life. Kleinman, who usually leads the course, empowers students to talk effec tively about difficult but important issues. Her method is student-centered, participatory and creates community. The workload is very reasonable and the readings are some of the best I've had at UNC. On a scale of 1 to 10, SOCI124 with Kleinman is a 12. -WC Hands-down one of the best classes at UNC. -MBK 2 PUBH 420-001 — AIDS: Principles, Practices and Politics ^ I really enjoyed this one hour pass/fail class. On the first day the professor told everyone to put their notepads away and to just listen and soak in as much as they could. It covers a wide range of issues from the science behind HIV drugs to HIV in Latina/o communities. The panels of people living with HIV/AIDS were incredibly stirring and informative. -WC 3. ENGL 140 - Gay and Lesbian Literature This class explores LGBTQ relationships in writing, poetry and short stories. Wendy Weber is a great instructor who encourages students to look beyond heternormative ideas of love and relationships. This is by far one of the best English courses here. -MBK 4 POLI 218 — Politics of Sexuality ^ Politics of Sexuality — the course that convinced me to declare my minor in Sexuality Studies! I can still remember how the class reacted to Dr. Convover's third lecture on coming out. It's absolutely bril liant. The professor is a skilled facilitator and really engages students in her lectures. The readings are provocative and the workload is demanding, but it is worth every minute you will spend. She also screens some very moving films. This is without a doubt one of the best courses offered at Carolina. -WC Win Chesson (wchesson@email.unc.edu) and Mary Beth Kaneklides (see page 4) are both seniors majoring in Women's Studies and completing the Sexuality Studies minor. Chesson is also an International Studies major.
