Hurricanes Have 11-5 Record
As of our deadline, Louisburg
College owned a basketball record
of ten wins and five defeats.
The team scoring on offense is
averaging 70.2 points a ball game
while we are yielding 67.3 points
per contest against the opposition.
Scores of four games are incom
plete. Leading scorers on the team
are Doug Reid, 21.6; Danny Car
ver, 18.3, and Jerry Combest, 16.6.
Reid’s high game score of 33 points
came against Roanoke Business
College, and Combest had a high
score of 29 against Wilmington.
Carver’s high game score of 23
came against Chowan. The team’s
high was 101 points scored against
Chowan. The lowest team effort
was against Richmond, when the
Purple and White managed only 57
points. Other statistics show that
the Hurricanes have yet to lose on
their home court this year.

last year’s conference champs, the
rival “Seahawks” of Wilmington.
The Seahawks were put through
their paces as the Hurricanes put on
a fabulous show of basket shooting
skill by hitting 58.9 per cent of their
shots.
In a closely fought first half
which saw the advantage change
several times, it was Combest, Reid,
and Carver, with 29, 25, and 20
points respectively, who scored vital
baskets and kept the Hurricanes in
contention. At the close of the half,
Louisburg held a mere 2 point lead.
Evidently expecting the Hurri
canes to fold in the second half as
they had in previous appearances,
the Seahawks were abruptly con
fronted with a 20 point deficit. The
Hurricanes then coasted to victory.
Clean “board-sweeping” by Car
ver, Goodrich, and Creech, and
sparkling floor play by Reid and
Combest prevailed throughout the
game. But the highlight of the eve
ning was a dead-eyed Jerry Combest,
who enjoyed a perfect night at the
foul line, hitting 17 of 17 free
throws.
“It was a great team effort,”

beamed Coach Wayne Benton after
the game. “We knew we could beat
them, and we did.”
Gene Bogash, who was voted last
year as the “most outstanding
player” in the conference, was
high for Wilmington with 24 points.
LOUISBURG 101—CHOWAN 73
Louisburg out gunned the Cho
wan Braves for a 101-73 victory
in the Holton Gymnasium.
Louisburg hit an amazing 73.1
per cent of their shots, while Cho
wan averaged 63.7 per cent from
the floor. The “Braves” from Mur
freesboro led most of the way
through the first half and did not
yield the lead until eight minutes
were left to play in the first half,
when Ricky Creech put home a two
pointer to put the “Hurricanes” in
front to stay at 27-25. Then it was
all Louisburg as they ran up the
score to 43-33 by intermission and
93-53 with five minutes remaining
in the game before Coach Wayne
Benton mercifully sent in his re
serves. High men for Louisburg
were Doug Reid with 27 points,
Danny Carver with 23, Jerry Com
best and Jim Goodrich adding 17,
and 13 respectively. The Hurri
canes put together a fine display of
team offence and defence and
showed the conference that they
are the team to beat this year.
