W.U.S. is the abbreviation
for a unique organization, the
World University Service. This
organization is financed by col
leges and universities. Its sole
purpose is to help under-privi-
leged colleges and universities
and it also gives aid to indivi
dual students. Some of the
projects which W. U. S. helped
with last year include: a stu
dent center in Peru, a student
health clinic in South Vietnam,
a dormitory in India and many
more. In addition, W.U.S. also
gave cash grants to indhridual
students for text books and
meals.

New Teaching Approaches
New ways of effective
teaching in colleges are being
explored every day. The tra
ditional class lecture is slowly
going out of style. It is being
replaced by the audio-tutorial
system. The audio-tutorial
system will activate the student
into individual work by which
he can learn more and at a
faster rate.
The audio-tutorial system is
being applied here in the
Biology Department and Mr.
Butler’s sociology class.
A new experimental lab was
added to the Biology Depart
ment during the Christmas
holiday. It is located on the
basement floor of the Franklin
building.
The purpose for this lab is
to offer the audio-tutorial
system which will in return
give the student a chance to do
individual work. The biology
department hopes the lab will
create more interest among the
students and help them in solv
ing problems that may occur in
their other lab.
The experimental lab offers
the students film strips and
taped recordings on material
covered in class. Also available
in this lab are microscopes, an
audio-dictator to help in the
pronunciation of words, and
plenty of reading material.
Plastic models and other bio
logical collections are on dis
play constantly.
The experimental lab only
supplements the regular
biology lab that is still required
of all students.
The lab is open six hours a
day Monday through Friday.
There is a member of the bio
logy department on duty to
give help to the student when
needed.
The response to this new lab
has been very good and it is
hoped that all the labs will be
changed to the audio-tutorial
system.
The audio-tutorial system in
sociology includes a lecture,
small group discussions, in
dependent research and audio
visual presentations. This sys
tem is designed to increase
efficiency of classroom time,
and provide individual instruc
tions.
Mimeographed copies of the
instructor’s lectures are re
ceived by the student to elimi-

nate classroom note taking.
The goal set for this class is
to provide opportunities for
students to attend a general
assembly, a seminar period,
and an audio-visual presenta
tion.
The general assembly is used
for the purpose of clarification,
instructions and other points
of emphasis beneficial to the
class. Written examinations,
guest lecturing, and general an
nouncements may also be given
at this time.
The seminar periods are de
signed to bring small groups
together for discussions, oral
examinations, and individual
instruction.
Sixteen millimeter films,
sound coordinate filmstrips, re
cordings, and field excursions
make up what will be taking
place in the audio-visual sec
tion.
Another method of teaching
introduced here at Louisburg
College is being done by Mr.
Farmer of the Department of
Religion.
In his classes all students
will be tested on each indivi
dual chapter. The students will
individually go to his office
and take the test. If the stu
dent fails the test he is allowed
to take it over as many times as
it takes him to pass it. The
student will be given as much
time as he needs to take the
test. The est will be used to
show the student what he is
lacking in.
One major quiz will be given
in class. It will not be repeated.
The student will have only one
chance to pass it.
The text book is to Le
finished as soon as possible.
This will give the student time
for independent study in this
course.
A research paper is also one
of the requirements of this
course.
The purpose of this type of
teaching is to separate the
factual material from the ap
plication of factual material.
