College Graduates Will Be Honored
At A Series Of Events May 16-17
On Saturday morning, May
16 at 8:30 A.M., the graduates
will be honored at the annual
Graduate’s Breakfast in the
Benjamin N. Duke Cafeteria.
Also at this time, permanent
class officers will be elected for
the class of 1970.
The Alumni Banquet will be
held on Saturday evening at
7:30 P.M. in the cafeteria. The
purpose of this event is to
formally present the graduating
class to the Alumni Associa
tion. The annual Alumni award
will be presented to an out
standing alumni at this time.
Music will be offered by the
Chapel Choir.
The speaker for this event
will be Doctor Cameron West,
Director of North Carolina
Board of Higher Education. Dr.
West was born in Walstonburg,
North Carolina, and he holds
his A. B., M. A., and Ed. D.
degrees from the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. West is married to the
former Florence Grace Creech
of Snow Hill, N. C., and they
have three children.
Dr. West has had plenty of
experience in the field of edu
cation. He served in the
USAAF for four years. He has
been a school administrator in
school systems of Fairmont, N.
C. and Jacksonville, N. C. He
has been an associate in the
Kellogg Research. His associa
tion with Pfeiffer College have
been as a professor and chair
man of the Division of Educa
tion and Academic Dean. He
has served as Executive Secre
tary for the General Assembly
Commission for the Study of
Teacher Merit Pay. In May
1966, he assumed the duties of
Associate Director of North
Carolina Board of Higher Edu
cation, and on December 1,
1968 he became the Director.
Mr. West has also served on
various committees. Among
these are the State Advisory
Council on Teacher Education
of the State Board of Educa
tion, Educational Television
Advisory Council of the Uni
versity of ,North Carolina,

Personnel Committee, Man
power Sub-Task Force, Re
gional Educational Laboratory
for the Carolinas and Virginia,

Louisburg College is indeed
very honored by the presence
of Dr. West at this annual
Alumni Banquet.
Baccalaureate Service will
be held on Sunday morning at
11:00 A.M. Brooks Hays, Di
rector of the Ecumenical Insti
tute of Wake Forest University
will be the guest speaker.
Brooks Hays has dedi
cated his entire career to public
service. For 16 years he repre
sented the Fifth Congressional
District of Arkansas in the
United States Congress, and he
has served as Special Assistant
to two Presidents. He is also
one of the country’s leading
churchmen, having been
elected to two successive terms
as president of the Southern
Baptist Convention. (1957-59).
Mr. Hays was born August
9, 1898, near Russellville, Ar
kansas. He received his bache
lor of arts degree from the
University of Arkansas in 1919
and his Juris Doctor degree
from George Washington Uni
versity in 1922. He holds
honorary degrees of doctor of
laws, and doctor of humanities.
Mr. Hays served from 1932
to 1939 as Democratic Na
tional Committeeman from his
State. In 1928 at the age of
thirty, he ran unsuccessfully
for Governor of Arkansas. He
was elected to Congress in
1942 and re-elected for seven
consecutive terms, serving until
January 1959. In June of that
year President Eisenhower ap
pointed him to the Board of
Directors of the Tennessee Val
ley Authority. He served on
the Board until 1961 when
President Kennedy • asked him
