Page Four COLUMNS Thursday, October 30, 1975 Wayne Ellington Former Louisbiirg Student Is New Intramural Director By JONATHAN PHILLIPS Sports Editor Wajoie Ellington, a Louisburg College graduate and a former star athlete for the Hurricanes, has returned to Louisburg to accept a position on the faculty in the physical education depart ment. Ellington was hired to replace Sam White, who departed after taking a position at Camp bell College as head baseball coach. Ellington will assume all of White’s former duties, which include responsibilities as girls’ basketball coach, assistant baseball coach, and ad ministration of the intramural program. Ellington came to Louisburg in 1970, where he began to make a name for himself in sports. In basketball, under present coach Enid Drake, he copped All- Conference honors his sophomore year. During the spring, he turned his attention to baseball, where he gained all-conference and all-state Junior college honors for two years. In his sophomore year, he was named to the National Junior College all- America team. After graduating from Louisburg in 1972, Ellington went to Elon College, where he continued his athletic heroics. He made all-conference in basket ball his senior season, and all conference and all-state awards came his way for two baseball seasons. Although Ellington is obviously well qualified, he lacks teaching experience. This is his first teaching job, but LC officials are happy about his selection. “It’s good to be back at Louisburg,” he stated in an in terview. “This is a nice place, and the people here are great to work with. I had a good, time when I was in school here, and I’m sure I’ll enjoy teaching and coaching here. Ellington is not too far away from home. He was bom and raised on a farm in Vance county, just north of Louisburg. He at tended Vance Senior High School. Louisburg Shoots For Par With AU-Frosh Golf Team The golf team at Louisburg College is one of proud heritage and has been for many years. Having won the conference title three times in the past five years, the golfers on this year’s squad will need a good season to follow up these past records. “I’m really pleased with golf teams we’ve had at Louisburg,” said coach James Lanier. “We’ve had all-conference and all- regional golfers and few who have competed in the nationals.” Last year’s team finished third in the conference with a 64 record. They were invited to play in the Region Ten Championships where they finished fourth. The team that won the Region Ten Championship placed sixth in the Nationals, giving one some idea of the degree of competition in our area. “We have no sophomores returning to this year’s team, but we do have some very good fresh men coming out,” Lanier com mented when asked about this year’s team. Volleyball Team Downs N.C.C.U. For First Win TTie women’s intercollegiate Volleyball team played Sep tember 23 against North Carolina Central University of Durham. The Hurricanes came out on top by a 15-7,15-7 score. Action took place in Holton Gym. The match, the first for both teams, was ragged at times. Mid way into the first game, Lynn Capps and Carolyn Hawkins of the ’Canes hit consecutive spikes to bring the game under control. Freshman Elaine Adams’ strong spiking led to an easy victory in the finale. Although happy to have a victory. Coach Pettit was not happy with the inconsistent play of his team. “North Carolina Central didn’t play that well,” Pettit said. “I’m glad that our freshmen had the opportunity to have some game experience, but I was a little disappointed in our defense. When North Carolina Central started making errors, we lost some of our concentration and became content just to keep the ball in play, rather than to work the ball to our strong spikers.” Tennis Team Enters Pfeiffer Tournament The Louisburg College tennis team was invited to play in an intercollegiate round-robin tournament on Sept. 26-27 at Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer, N. C. Teams involved in the tournament Louisburg, San dhills, Pfeiffer and Wingate. The competition was tough with Pfeiffer, a four-year school and Wingate who is always tough. Sandhills also fielded a fine team. Representing the Hurricanes were Doug Jones, Jeff Joseph, Dan Singletary, Doug Emory, Tommy Weston and Scott Sowers. Dan Singletary, seeded No. 3 for LC was the only player to win both of his matches. Absent from the trip were Herb Bailey and Bob Laws, regular top six players. The sole first-round doubles match was won by the team of Jones and Joseph, the No. 1 doubles team. Pfeiffer won the tournament, followed by Wingate, Louisburg and San dhills. On Oct. 10, tennis coach Terry Pettit and the tennis team hosted the tennis team from Lees- McRae College. This was an exhibition match in which the Canes were downed 8-1. LC’s only victory came from Doug Emory, playing at the No. 5 singles position. Coach Pettit feels that by spring the team will be better prepared. This will most likely conclude the fall season for the tennis team except for team practices. They will resume match play in the spring with 10 conference tilts. Some standouts from last year’s team were Pete Robinson, who was All-Conference and All- Regional and Jim Bromery, also an All-Conference player. All members of last year’s team are on golf teams at Campbell. Elon, ECU or UNC-G. The golf team will participate in two tournaments this fall. The first one will be held at Ferrum Junior College on Ground Hog Mountain in Virginia. This is an invitational tournament and will be held Oct. 13-14. The second tournament will be the October Madness Tour nament (Oct. 29-30) which will be jointly hosted by Louisburg and Sandhills College. The first round New Cheerleading Squad Makes Plans For Year The 1975-76 cheerleading squad this year is a combination of two freshmen and six sophomores, three of whom are returnees.
