Page 8 CXDLUMNS March 1982 Batter Up! Baseball By Barry Eagle Well, it's that time of the year again. The baseball season is just around the corner. The Hurricanes start their season off March 10. The -team will be off on a five-game road trip and will return the fifteenth for their first home game. During the first five games, Louisburg will play teams such as Clemson and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The Hurricanes will play 43 games before tournament time, and they should have a good chance to go back to the world series like last year. The Canes are rated third in the Junior College preseason polls, and they hope to finish number one. The returning players from last year are Al Murray, Jabo Fulghum, Kevin Korpi, Charles Canady, and Matt Whimmel. Good luck Canes! Softball Excited about the new coming softball season? Coach Sheilah Gotten really is. Yes, this is the first season for women's softball and it should be an exciting one. The Lady Canes start their season off March 17 against Mt. Olive. Miss Gotten said, "Peace, Mt. Olive and Chowan should be our toughest opponents." The Canes play 15 games before the tournament. The tournament will be held here at Louisburg April 24. Some of the key players on the team are Courtney Lancaster, The resa Taylor, Tammy Kearney, and Sue Barrett. All of them are sophomores and should show great leadership throughout the season. So let's all back the softball team and hope they have a great season! Do You Know who was the first woman to be inducted into the ECU Sports Hall of Fame? Well, if you don't know, she is a teacher and coach here at Louisburg College. Sheilah Cotten is the answer. Miss Cotten is a graduate of East Carolina University, where she was the first female basketball player to score over 1000 points. Although Miss Cotton didn't start playing organized basketball until her fresh man year in high school at Fuquay-Varina, she played every position on the ECU team. She began as a center in her freshman year and she finished up as .a guard in her senior year. "The game I remember the most is when we beat Tennessee Tech in 1973 regional championship that sent us to the national championship." Miss Cotten said in that game she scored 39 points which continues to hold the school record for the most points scored in a game. She also holds the record for most field goal attempts in a game. She said, "We are the only North Carolina women's basketball team to ever make it to the national finals. ^ Miss Cotten has been at Louisburg for five years where she is coaching softball and teaching health. They are Divisional Champions and are ranked second in the nation. They have been on television several times and have officially put Louisburg on the map. It appears promising that again this year the Lady Hurricanes will bring the NJCAA award home - although they do have a few more stepping stones before crossing into victory land. First, they have regionals in Spartanburg, SC, March 3-4. The winners of these games will then qualify for the National Preliminaries March 9; there, they will play the champions of Region 5. The place where the National Preliminaries will be played will be decided by the coaches. The winners will then go to Overland Park, Kansas and play in the NJCAA March 16-20. Regina Miller, Daisy Williams, Cornelia Howard and Robin Graves are our four living legends who went to Kansas last year and brought back with them the NJCAA, making the first time Louisburg College had won the NJCAA. Whe(i I asked Robin Graves about being a living legend, she smiled and said, "It's alright." As far as being second in the nation, she said, "1 think it's wonderful." These ladies are not sure what they are going to do as an encore after this season. It is understood that they have all received letters from different schools, yet no final decisions have .been made as yet. My prediction is that the Lady Hurricanes v\/ill go all the way again this year. Three of the top scorers for the team are: Regina Miller, sopho more, averaging 22 points per game; Gladys Best, freshman, averaging 16.2 points per game, and Clara Faison, freshman, averaging 10.8 points per game. Clara also controls the highest in rebounds (216) as recorded after the twenty-fourth game. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, LADIES!! Miss Sheilah Cotten ;« I Deliverance Never Mind the Score You can catch me if you run- Hold on to the back of my leg . While I lay up FOULED You're angry- trailing by four points You've crowed me While 1 made a point. Blocking what I do best. I will stop you- Bring you down ' And gift you With a nonconfident state of mind Yes, and Devour you- UNTIL YOU ARE NO MORE
