It is also referred to as the “Feast of Unleavened Bread” because the day the Hebrews left Egypt, they did not have time for their bread to rise so they left out the leven (yeast). According to Hebrew tradi tion, God put ten plagues on Pharaoh before he would finally let the people go. In the last plague, God killed all the firstborn in Egypt. The Hebrews had to kill a one- year old lamb and put its blood around the doors of their houses as a sign to God to “pass over” their first born. They roasted-the lamb, and ate it with unleavened bread (bread without yeast) arid bitter herbs. It was during the Jewish Passover season that the Easter events took place. The “Last Supper” was in fact, a celebration of Passover by Jesus and his friends. Passover is still very impor tant to people in Israel because it is a part of their history. Jewish people all over the world celebrate Passover the same way that the Hebrew people did that night. This year, Passover will be celebrated from March 29 to April 5. -c»- By WILLIAM WARREN The Columns recently in terviewed Mr. Easter Bunny. COLUMNS: I have a feeling the next few minutes won’t be the “Best of Times” for Mr. E. Bunny. Have a Happy Easter! History of Easter WILLIAM WARREN Easter is the time of year for chocolate bunnies and eggs. It seems natural enough for us to eat these at an ac customed time, but do we ever stop to think why? There is a reason. The bunny is really a hare, and according to legends of Egypt, the hare is a symbol of the moon. The date of Easter is determined by the moon. As for the eggs, they are the symbol of new life, and that probably is why is has come to hold so much significance at the com memoration of the Resurrec tion. The colored eggs are ex changed as a token of peace at Easter. Egg giving even goes back to Egyptian customs. The observance of Easter as the time of the resurrec tion of Christ is surely the most significant “custom” of all, for it commemorates that very first Easter, more than 19 hundred years ago. It began when the angel of the Lord spoke from the garden. “He is not here; for he is risen.”
