January 1985 The Columns 2 Whitfivmis There was crimson clash of war, Lands turned black and bare; Women wept; Babes ran; wondering There came one who knew not these things He said, '‘why is this!” Where upon a million strove to answer him There was such an intricate clamor of tongues That still the reason was not. Stephen Crane This paper in the next three issues will attempt to simplify and sort out the many voices that flood our everyday lives and leave us resigned to complacency. KT SLBIbU: / Lets All Be A Part Of Black History Month In recognition of national Black History month, which is a nationwide celebration paying tribute to the many contributions of black people in the United States, a collection of conscientious students have had the zeal to include Louisburg College and its surrounding community in recognizing the many unique and wonderful qualities black people have brought to the United States. Louisburg students, who include Byrd Wilkins, Patricia Dunston, and Tammy Mitchell, have dedicated their time and effort into making this nationwide tribute to black culture mean something to Louisburg. Entitled “Brotherhood and Unity Celebration”, the special homage being payed to the rich Black History will include a j variety of intriguing activities, ilt all starts on the 26th of February and will run to the 28th of February. Here is a list of planned events: Tuesday, February 26th - Folk tales and Afro-American stories told by area residents. Wednesday, February 27th - A program that will include a surprise speaker, poetry readings and modern dance. Thursday, February 28th - A Variety Show in the Multi- Purpose Room that will feature local talent. Also, on Wednesday Ed Moolenaar (Food Service Director) will help celebrate Black History month by providing dinner with some good down home southern cooking. The students leading the program stress that “only through participation, cooperation, encouragement, and a lot of support by the Louisburg College community and family will the tribute become, indeed, a celebration. From The President For Christmas, I received a calendar and a poster called Murphy’s Laws - And Other Truths. Murphy seems to be the ultimate pessimist, but what he says is often true. I’m going to share some of my favorites with you. If you’re feeling good, don’t worry, you’ll get over it. Friends come and go, but enemies accumulate. A short cut is the longest distance between two points. When in doubt, make it sound convincing. The chance of a buttered piece of bread falling in your lap is directly proportional to the cost of your pants. When a broken appliance is demonstrated for the repair man, it will work perfectly. Never argue with a fool, people might not know the difference. The chances of being seen are dramatically increased by not wanting to be seen. I just needed to get all this pessimism out of my system. For some reason the cold weather and snow seems to make everyone crabby. To tell you the truth, I am already looking forward to spring. In the mean time. I’d like to see all of my pessimism turn to optimism. It would be even better if everyone could join me. This campus needs to work together. A divisive campus gets nothing done, but a unified campus has no limits. I am asking all sophomores and freshmen to work and give a little effort into making a campus full of pessimists into an active and fun group of optomists. There is a Valentines Day Dance, February 14th. Ask Tripp Foltz and Amy Joseph if you can do anything to help.
