Drake has been the basketball coach for the Canes since 1965. through his many years at the helm of the Canes basketball program Drake has seen many changes in basketball on the junior college level. The program at Louis burg has grown and improved during his long tenure as head coach. The competition has gotten stiffer due to a more competitive schedule as has the difficulty in recruiting. When asked about the 1984- 85 edition of Hurricane basketball Drake responded, “If we can get everybody healthy, I feel confident going into the conference tournament. With the exception of two teams, we know all our conference opponents. I feel each opponent we have lost to is beatable. If everybody comes together, I feel our chances look bright for the tournament.” Drake came to Louisburg in 1965 after serving eleven years at Middlesex High School in Nash County, where he was head basketball coach. He also coached girls basketball for seven of his eleyen years at Middlesex. Drake is a physical education major from Wake Forest as well as a holder of a Masters Degree in Education from East Carolina University. Enid Drake has served the college of Louisburg quite admirably as a teacher, coach and member of the community. The students of Louisburg College should be grateful as well as proud to have Enid Drake at their service.
