September 1985 The Columns ECCLESIASTES 3 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be bom, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace; What gain has the worker from his toil? Hargrove Raring To Go Ethics at S.M.U By WARREN HARRIS It was supposed to be another closed matter, but it wasn’t. When SMU’s football program was put on a three year probation, with limited scholarships, (15 this year, 13 the next year and in 1987 zero). But the coach of the Mustangs, Bobby Collins filed for an appeal because he couldn’t compete and win on such a strict probation. This offense is the sixth one for the SMU program. Why should Collins get another chance? Other Universities after repeated offenses would cut or drop a football program such as this one. Sure some colleges do cheat, but some do not! Whatever happened to honor and glory for the college football game. And having that player graduate with a degree. As hard as it is to live in this economy today, an education is like gold. Some sportswriters have shown sympathy for Collins. Why? I do not see any reason for this. Two wrongs do not make a right. Coach Collins has committed a crime and the NCAA’s are the judge and jury. So since Collins has been convicted, then sentence should be carried out. Where has the game gone to? I would like to welcome all students to Louisburg College for the 1985-86 school year. We are really excited about the upcoming year. Our two major events that have already occurred went very well. We appreciate the attendance at both the Welcome Bach Dance and Carl Rosen. The S.G.A. is planning a very ambitious year. We have scheduled the night club band From Tbe President “KRUZE” for our Annual Halloween Dance and plan to sponsor a costume contest for the dance. All of the officers, chairman and committee members have worked hard to plan a great year for you. We are always open for new ideas and suggestions that will help to make the year better. I hope to have the opportunity to meet all of you during the year and I wish you good luck! MARK HAGROVE Senate Seat Open Former Governor James B. Hunt Jr. announced Thursday, September 12 that he would not run in the 1986 Senate race. The Senate seat held by Republican Senator John East will be up for election next year. Hunt lost his last bid for the U.S. Senate to Right Wing Republican Senator Jesse Helms in 1984. Hunt and Senator Helms’ bid for the Senate was the most expensive in our nation’s history. The majority of Senator Helms’ Campaign was funded by the National Congressional Club, which is a conservative political “fat- cats” from all over the nation. Hunt served 12 years in North What happened to the student athelete? Beano Cook has said that this kind of person does not exist in college football. But I think that is wrong! If that is, the case, then something is very wrong with this society of college football. What about a student’s education, what has happened to it? What has happened to achievement in school and the sport? Which one receives top priority now? I say the NCAA is right for what they have done. Therefore, we should say yea! for the NCAA. Because they are what I said earlier, judge and jury. A Cure For The Homesick Blues By STAFF WRITER For many college students the problem of homesickness is all too real. As we are all well aware, leaving loved ones and a way of life can be difficult at best. The person successful in dealing with homesickness is the one that can put aside these feelings and consentrate on the problems at hand. To fall behind in your studies at college is to find pne of the easiest of ways to return home. None of us however, relish the thought of being sent home due to academic difficulty! By throwing your consentration souly on your work or other activity, it becomes easier to take your mind off being homesick. Many people can and do find ways of returning home on weekends. Car pools to locations all over the state are very common. Just by asking around, it would be very possible for someone to find a ride home with someone else who has access to a car. Sports are a definite plus in beating the homesick blues. Whether the sport be intramural or school backed, sports can help you unwind and forget your problems:. Homesickness can be beaten! Carolina state government as Lt. Governor and two terms as Governor. After Hunt’s announcement, CAPrrAi oinxooH former Duke University President Terry Sanford, said he would let the public know his decision October 1. It is expected that Sanford will run. Sanford also served as Governor of North Carolina from 1961 to 1965. Other possible Democratic conten ders are: Fountain Odom, a Mecklinburg County Commis sioner, State Senator Marshall Rauch of Gastonia, D.M. “Lauch” Faircloth, former State Commerce Secretary, former State Insurance Commissioner John Ingram and a Charlotte lawyer, D.G. Martin. At one time, UNC President William Friday and 7th District Congressman Charlie Rose were thought to be Democratic contenders, but each announced that they would not run JEFF BULLARD he Cfllumns Editor-In-Chief Rob Dunnington, Jr. Sports Editor .
