5 December 1985 Scene LADY CANES GO FOR IT Pholo b\ Budtlv Uvdc 31 ■? Up and Coming PERFECT TOUCH Phoio by Buddy Hyde By SUZANNE UZZELL The Lady Hurricanes basketball team doesn’t believe in making excuses. Sure, their record is 1-2, but the Lady ‘Canes are up and coming; they’ll be a winner by season’s end - you can put money on that. According to Cbach Sheilah Gotten, the entire team has a lot to learn. With four freshmen starters, there are mistakes that will be made. Only time and experience can change that, plus the determination this squad has to become successful. The overall attitude of the team is good, and all the hard work will begin paying off as the season progresses. The Lady ‘Canes have the capability to beat anybody with the typical aggressive defense they play, and added in with the hustle and desire that has become commonplace in the last eight years of Louisburg College women’s basketball, they could become very competitive in Region X play. Although the Lady Hurri canes have been outscored by an average of 14 points per game, many good things were shown. Leading team scoring is Stephanie Newton with 16 points per game. Also chipping in are Cynthia Jones i LADY CANE ON THE MOVE PlioU) by Buddv 11 (13 points per contest) and Lisa Bruton (11 points per contest). Strong rebounding is another asset ^ with Cynthia Jones pulling down 9 per game, Stephanie Newton 7, and Mia Pinnix 6. The team avrages 35 total rebounds per game. Coach Cotten adds that field goal shooting improves as well as team free throw percentages. If turnovers decrease and assists increase, the squad will be well on the way to a winning record. In pursuit of victory, the Lady 'Canes have started developing a solid sense of unity and team leadership. Sophomores Valerie Cooper, Denise Dingee, Mia Pinnix, and Suzanne Uzzell will play a key role in the not yet fully emerged team leadership. The Lady Hurricanes play an aggressive style of basketball, exciting many fans along the way. If you haven’t seen them play, come out and watch. It will be an experience you’ll never forget. Remember, this team is on its way to the top. Don’t miss out on the fun! Newton: Hustle, Determination By SUZANNE UZZELL What does it take to become a successful college basketball player? According to 5'8" freshman Stephanie Newton, it all boils down to one thing: putting out. Recently I had a chance to chat with Stephanie, and the thing that most impressed me about her was how much she wanted to win. She will do anything on the court to win, and as her stats show, hustle is her biggest game plan. Since Stephanie is shorter than most forwards, she finds that the fundamentals of offense and defense, like boxing out on “D” and ah occasional pump fake under the boards, are the easiest ways to score points and with the team. When asked what effect the higher level of competition had on her game personally, she cooly stated, “I change strategies for each game. I want to carry out my job on the team, and do it better each time out. By scrapping and hustling, I hope for it to rub off on the rest of the squad so we will improve ai STEPHANIE NEWTON as a team each game.” Stephanie has found the biggest difference between high school and college hoops to be the physical aspect of it. “ I can get away with more now than in high^chool. I also get pushed quite a bit more. Conditioning is a lot different, too; I’ve never run so much in my entire life!” Stephanie found it hard to explain what she expected from college round ball. One thing she didn’t want to be was intimidated. And intimidate she wasn’t. Having scored 49 points in the Lady ’Guies first three games, Steph was tlie last one who expected her to do so well. Her goals are not all personal ones, though. she thinks that if the team begins to pull together and things go right, a national playoff beith is not out of the question. Behind every good player is a good coach, and Stephanie attributes her winning attitude to Coach Cotten. “Coach pushes me to the limit as she does everyone else, and that taake me work all the harder. I want us to win. That’s all I’m trying to do, work for the team. Losing is not something I’m used to.” This is just another example of what hustle, pride, determination, hard work, and positive thinking will do for you. It’s all part of what it takes to win. It’s what I call putting out, and it sounds like a winner to me!!
