W. ROBBINS I • LOUISBURGCOLLCQt fcOUlSaORG, N C. mtlB I /olume 46 No. 1 Louisburg College Louisburg, NC WELCXDME TO LOUISBURG COLLEGE A Welcome From the Dean of Students It’s seldom that we have the chance to “start fresh” with our lives, but when we go to college we have that chance to a greater degree than at almost any other time in our adult lives. One of the unfortunate aspects of growing up in our public school system is that we are often labelled at an early age as a leader, a brain, a dummy, a sissy or any of several stereotypes that may or may not be accurate. Yet many of us accept the label as if it were written in stone and spend the first eighteen or so years of our lives trying to live up (ordown) to it. Sometimes, however, we grow very uncomfortable with our labels and need to shuck them off in order to become the person we want to be. Most of the time if we want to change PRESIDENT NORRIS DEAN ELLER President Norris Welcomes You our labels we have to worry about a whole pile of reports, forms, records, transcripts, scores, opinions and percep tions that have accumulated for and against us in previous years. That brings us to this point. When we enter college, all of our previous records are effectively erased; we begin building a new stack of reports, records, scores, etc. which cancel all of the ones we accumulated before. The main cont. on pg. 8 All of us at Louisburg College in this 1986-87 school year - students, faculty, and staff - have an opportunity to celebrate something never before celebrated here - the 200th birthday of the College! Yes, the founding date was 1787, and it is right that we should take special note of it as we proceed through the current academic year. Watch for announcements of how we all can be involved! For new students on campus, we welcome you and are pleased to have you become a part of the Louisburg College community. We look forward to getting to know you and to the contributions you will make to campus life. With near record enrollment it may take a while for the faculty and staff to learn names, but we will work on it! As classes begin, let us remember that they are our primary reason for being here. A “good start” in each one is very important and can set the stage for successful completion. Our faculty members care about each student and will help in any way they can - just talk with them as you need assistance. Let’s make this year a positive one to remember as we look to our past and plan for our future! A Welcome From The Academic Dean McDuffie Named Director A Goldsboro native has been selected to be director of admissions and financial aid at Louisburg College. Mrs. Eli^ - b e th McDuffie completed requirements for an Associate of Arts degree from St. Mary’s College in 1978. She received a B.S. degree in industrial relations and psychology for UNC-Chapel Hill in 1980. She served as assistant director of admissions and financial aid at St. Mary’s from 1980 until 1984. She also worked at N.C. State University as assistant director of financial aid from 1984 until 1986. “We feel fortunate to have a person with the experience and qualifications Elizabeth brings to this vital administrative role,” Steve Brooks, dean of academic services, said Tuesday. “She is highly regarded within the admissions and financial aid community in North Carolina. We are confident she will be highly successful in her work at Louisburg College.” ACADEMIC SUCCESS!! That is our mutual goal as we welcome you to Louisburg College. Regardless of your high school academic performance, you are begin ning with a CLEAN SLATE at Louisburg. This is one of the few opportunities you will ever have to make a NEW BEGINNING. Every staff and faculty member of Louisburg wants you to succeed and will assist youiin every reasonable way. We know you have the ability (that is why we admitted you). So, what is the key to the success that you, your parents and we want? In my opinion, the key is DESIRE. You have to REALLY CARE. You have to WANT SUCCESS enought to have INITIATIVE and COMMITMENT. We pledge to do our part to help you begin your college education, but our task is impossible if you do not care enough. An educatipn is not something that happens to you or is done to you, nor is it something you get like bread in a bag--you educate yourself. Take advantage of every opportunity; do not hesitate to ask questions and seek help when needed. Our College literature bears the inscription, “A Sense of Direction.” It is my fervent hope that Louisburg helps you educate yourself and gain a sense of direction for a fulfilling future. Learning can and should be fun—enjoy yourself. C. Edward Brown, Jr. Academic Dean DEAN BROWN
