October 1986 The Columns 2 Editorial Page Lets Raise Our Flag FROM THE EDITORS Driving down Bickett Boulevard every so often, one can’t help but notice the massive American flag flying in front of McDonald’s or Hardees. But driving north on main street past the statue of our confederate war hero, I don’t see a flag anywhere. All I see is a barren flagpole. Why doesn’t the flag fly at Louisburg College? Now, I’m not saying that the college isn’t patriotic. There are many patriotic people here. What I’m saying is that since, this is our 200th birthday celebration, it might be appropriate to start raising the flag everyday in show of patriotism and pride. And I don’t think flying the flag would be a major problem. Fm sure the school has one lying around somewhere. If not, we could buy one. I’m sure they’re not that expensive. Several students on campus display large American flags in their rooms, so I’m sure that it’s not a problem getting one. As for flag duty, I don’t think it would be a problem for one of the security guards to find a little spare time to raise it or take it dowrl when necessary. Since this is our 200th birthday coming up, our college is almost as old as our nation. And since the 200th anniversary of the constitution is also coming up in 1987, there can’t be a better time than now to stdrt raising the flag every day. As for the size of the flagr I would recommend getting the biggest size possible. Have you ever seen the flag raised by Hardees? It is awesome. And it would be great if Louisburg College could raise a flag as large as possible* It would look impressive and it would be a wonderful way to show our patriotism and pride. I think that their feedback will help your staff to better organize this paper to give them what they want. I would like to note that die “Letters to the Editor” need not be limited to complaints, but also include praise and approval for a job well done. Either would be appreciated. I’m certain. I have heard a variety of responses to the last issue - good and bad. Phone calls were nice but provide so little copy. Gee, if only these people would write their tasteful, printable responses in a letter to the editor and submit them to The Columns office in the Student Center so that everyone might benefit from them. Gee . . . • Sincerely, An Editor
