Vandals!
Letter Offensive to
College Republicans
From The Editors
Congratulations are in order. Last
Wednesday night, at about • 10:30,
somebody trashed the television lounge in
the student center. The furniture was
overturned, blinds were ripped out of the
wall, a lamp was smashed, the cable was
wrenched from the T. V. - damaging the set
and the cable, and trash was strewn
about. Good job, you jerks.
► Vandalism is definitely a problem at this
school. This is particularly tri«of the
residence halls. People punch holes in
walls out of sheer idiocy. Fires have been
set, walls defaced and trash is constantly
:dver tunied in the hallways. Community^;

From The Editorial Staff
A letter that several college
Republicans considerd offensive
to their political beliefs was
recently seen posted around
campus in the Taft building. It
was entitled “Young Republi
cans In Love,” and it made
references to young Republi
cans being racists, greedy, and
uncaring about their fellow
man. It is the opinion of
certain members of The
Columns editorial staff that
this letter was cruel to some
young conservatives and that it
unfairly stereotyped them.
For example, the letter
advertised a movie entitled
“Young Republicans In Love.”
It stated “They’re Rich . . .
They’re Happy , . . They’re
White . . . They’re Young
Republicans in Love.” It also
contained the following
statements: “You’ll stare in
disbelief as they defend all
policies that benefit the rich
and comfort the powerful,”
“see it now ... or see ’em in
hell,” and “see them worship
fame ... take no blame... have
no shame. ’’ The movie also has
a hit theme song entitled “We
own the World,” and for the
first time on screen you can
view, “the awsome spectacle of
the Young Republicans mating
ritual!” which is, “as bizarre as
that of the French poodle!”
Some College Repblicans
are not like this. Many are not
bigots, and believe in equal
opfKjrtunity for all citizens
whether they be black, white,
yellow, or whatever color they
may be. Are we to assume that
Abraham Lincoln, Ronald
Reagan, Robert Dole, Dwight
Eisenhovs/er, Theodore Rcx)se-
velt, Gerald Ford, Richard
Nixon, or Governor Martin
were “rich, happy, and white,”
and “young Republicans in
love” at one time? If one’s
memory serves him or her
correctly, he or she might recall
that Lincoln abolished slavery
and was a Republican, and that
all of these great leaders have
believed in equal opportunity
for all citizens. These men
didn’t necessarily believe that
the rich should get big tax
breaks. Most just believe that
the rich should give the same
percentage of their income to
the state as everyone else.
Some Young Republicans
don’t like being portrayed as
young, rich, greedy, ignorant
racists who are going to “seen
in hell”. Many consider
themselves common, low key,
hard working Americans who
are not by all means “rich”. We
at The Columns wonder if
some of their freedoms they
believe in have been taken away
by a letter that portrays them as
bigots and so fordi. This is
taking the right to free speech
(1st Amendment) a bit too far.
Whoever put out that
cartoon should have thought
twice. By circulating this
deragative trash that unfairly
sterotypes, thay are bringing
themselves down to the same
level of mudslinging as the
extremists they themselves
attack. Sometimes it makes us
wonder.
Its funny, but we haven t seen
any conservative students or
faculty putting up propaganda
against citizens with different
political beliefs.
What troubles us with the
letter is the “Young
Republicans” part. Some of
us might consider it funny if
that was not part of the letter.
Maybe it should have been
entitled something else.
