Charles Johnson, the newly
appointed director of student
activities and coordinator of the
Jordan Student Center has got
more activities than ever
planned for the student body in
the coming year. “I want to
offer as many extra programs
and activities as possible to the
students,” he said.
Although he begins his new
job after just finishing work on
his M.F.A. degree (obtained
form UNC Greensboro), he is
no stranger to Louisburg
College, having worked here
from 1981-84 as a resident
director. Extremely talented in
the theatre, Charles hop>es to
involve students in several
theatrical productions as well
as bring other groups in to
perform. His masters degree is
in theatre management while
his undergraduate degree,
obtained from Greensboro
College, is in music education.
“I am here for the students and
would like to be very visible to
them. I encourage them to
come by my office in the
Student C^enter to talk with
me,” he said.
Labor day weekend,
September 5-7, promises to be
very exciting to those students
who want to take advantage of
everything that’s offered. *On
Friday the 4th beginning at 8:00
p.m. and continuing through
2:00 a.m., Saturday, students
can watch the following movies
in the Multi Purpose Room:
“The Color Purple,” “Little
Shop of Horrors,” “Stand by.
Me,” and “Mien.” On Sunday,
September 6, a picnic outside
the Jordan Student Center and
pick-up softball game
following, highlight the day’s
activities. On Monday,
Jieptember 7, a bus trip to Busch
Gardens in Williamsburg,
Virginia is planned. The cost
for the day (unlimited rides and
transportation) is only $7.00.
Reservations must be made
early, so contact Charles as
soon as possible.
Looking down the road,
Charles hopes to offer a shuttle
bus to Raleigh on the
weekends, the setting up of a
student coffee house with
faculty and student entertain
ment, and the forming of
student comtemporary and
Gospel choirs. Possible trips to
New York and Florida are also
being looked into.
In order to carry out all that
he is planning for the
upcoming year, a number of
student volunteers will be
needed to assist with
coordinating the events.
Anyone interested should
contact Charles in the Jordan
Student Center.
Mr. Fingers” comes to Louisburg College
By Michael Sylvester and Staff
The nationally known
sleight-of-hand artist, Irv
Weiner, “Mr. Fingers,” will
perform in the Multi-Purpose
Room of the Jordan Student
Center on Wednesday,
September 16 at 8:00 p.m. The
event is sponsored by the S.G.A.
Weeks before his upcoming
appearance, Weiner mailed a
sealed package to Dean Partin,
assistant dean of students to be
guarded until show time.
Weiner promises that inside the
box is his written prediction of
the September 16 news
headlines.
Aside from this test of ESP,
Weiner will also demonstrate
hand stunts, finger bits, card
tricks, rope crafts, and
voodoo.
In addition to entertaining
college students, Weiner has
been a columnist for two
publications of magic and has
participated in a magic
symposium sponsored by the
Department of Theatre and
Stage Acts at Syracuse
University.
Weiner also has devoted time
to entertaining hospital
patients in the New England
states, and was named “man of
the Year” by the Boston
Assernbly of the Society of
American Magicians in 1973.
The one-man show, which is
currently touring throughout
the nation at colleges and
universities, brings back the
skills of the past greats of old
vaudeville. Weiner who
graduated and then taught at
Chavez College in Los Angeles,
(the only accredited sleight-
of hand college in the world) is a
recognized master of the art.
Weiner has been a speaker
and entertainer to clubs,
industrial groups, and schools
for a number of years. Last
year, he developed the present
one-man show aimed at the
college audience.
“The students have never
seen this style performer,” he
says. “I have probed back into
the most unique acts of early
vaudeville: Houdini,
Thurston, Malini and Cardini,
all great sleight-of-handers and
showmen. In my own way I try
to bring the students back to
that time and they all seem to
love it.”
