Exam Schedule, see pp. 8-9 Wrt Cjilumns Vol. 49, No. 4 The Student Voice of Louishurz College December 1, 1989 Taking a Stand: Abortion Forum Presented by Peace Group by Lisa Malpasso, Staff Writer An abortion forum organized and sponsored by the Louisburg College Peace Group was held Tuesday, November 14, at 7:30 in Benson Chapel. About a hun dred students, faculty, and in vited guests attended. Ron Hasson introduced the speakers and moderated the discussion. The forum was intended to offer information and important viewpoints from the wide spec trum of ideas about the topic of abortion. The speakers included Betty Rogers, Margaret Odum, Stewart Rogers, Paul Byron, and Anne Bachmann. The pro-life side was pre sented by Paul Byron, a Catholic priest from Raleigh, and Betty Rogers, a volunteer coordinator of nurses and a graduate student in English from Greensboro. Father Byron expressed views through the eyes of the Catholic Church and from his own indi vidual standpoint. He stated, “The Church believes in the bus iness of the lesser evils” and described what he called its “consistent pro-life” position: its opposition to euthanasia, the death penalty, and abortion. Brooks, Brooks to Leave College Steven E. Brooks, Dean of Academic Services and Financial Aid and Professor of Social Stu dies, has recently been ap pointed Associate Director of Financial Aid at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. An employee of the college since 1976, Dr. Brooks was Director of Admissions and Finan cial Aid before becoming Dean of Academic Services. He has held his present position for about five years and is particu larly credited by other members of the administration for compu terizing student records. Dr. Brooks earned his BA, MA, and Ed.D. from the Univer sity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition. Dr. Brooks was recently elected to a 3*year term of service on the College Schol arship Service (CSS) Council of the College Boards. His appointment at Wake Forest will begin December 1. Virginia H. Brooks, Assistant Professor of English, will also move to Winston-Salem. She plans to teach in that area. Ms. Brooks, who has taugiht at Louisburg since 1981, is an alumna of the college (AA.). She earned her AB. and MAT. fromUNC-CH. that somewhere one or more of our own ancestors might have been conceived under unfavor able conditions. Ms. Rogers says, “We owe a debt to the past we can only play to the future.” The pro-choice side was repre sented by Margaret Odum, Pubic Aflfiairs Coordinator of Greater Raleigh, and Anne Bachmann, a Methodist minister, former neo natal nurse, and mother of Peace Group member Rebecca Wirth. Ms. Bachmann Considers her self a moralist but feels that every woman should be allowed to make her own decision. She believes that “men cannot really understand how a.woman feels while pregnant. It should ulti mately be up to the woman.” Ms. Odum presented facts and figures on unwanted pregnan cies and abortions taking place. She believes that if abortions are made illegal, women wiU resort to illegal and self-induced abor tions. Organ Installed by Craig Lloyd, Sports Editor Louisburg College has been given a pipe organ by the alumni. The organ, located in Benson Chapel, wiU be dedicated to Sarah Foster, Professor Emeritus of Music, at a ceremony later in the year. The organ was purchased from Randall Dyer and Asso ciates of Jefferson City, Tennes see, and cost approximately $60,000. I interviewed Bradley Jones and Jeff Weiler, both ton^ directors for Randall Dyer, who have been putting the finishing touches on the organ. Jones and Weiler said that the oi^an is totally custom designed for the room it is placed in, from the wooden architecture to the size of the pipes. See Organ, Ste\!v^ Rogers, a physician from Greensboro and teacher at the medical school at UNC, is a self-proclaimed moderate on the issue of abortion. He believes that the fetus is a living human being and that life should be preserved whenever feasible but that abortion is sometimes the lesser of evils. He said, “I have a slight preference for people I can see.” The Peace Group, by present ing dialogue on such a impor tant controversy as abortion, hopes to make information avail able on topics that have an effect on us all. The Peace Group encourages students to become informed about these issues, take a stand, and write their governmental representatives to express their opinions.
