The College maintains a bal

spring Weekend. Students also
participate in a variety of campus
student publications, such as The
Columns and The Oak, the

is under the advisorship of Chap

Learning Should Be Joyous!
I
Dr. C. Edward Brown, Jr.
Interim Pres. & Academic Dean
By C. Edward Brown, Jr.
I will be your Academic Dean
during your stay at Louisburg Col-
lege, and I welcome the
opportunity to assist you in any
way that I can. I will also be
serving as your President for part
of this year while the College en
gages in a search process to select
a new President.
I am glad that you are going to
be a part of the 1992-93 chapter in
the life of Louisburg College. Stu
dents like you make the lives of the
staff and faculty very interesting
and full of rewarding experiences.
We enjoy helping you face the
challenges, joys and labors of
learmng. You might question the
joy, but yes, there should be joy in
learning along with the hard work.
Instructing students through computer commands is Matt Brown
It should be fun to learn and we
hope you find it so at Louisburg
College.
We cannot promise you that all
your learning experiences will be
easy or totally successful. What
we do promise you is that we will
assist you in every legitimate way
to achieve your learning goals. I
have heard some not-so-industri-
ous students say that it would have
been nice if they could have inher
ited knowledge from their parents
in the same way they acquired big
feet, and they wished they could
absorb knowledge by osmosis or
could purchase it in a plastic bag
like bread. I have always been
glad that knowledge is not acquired
in any of these labor free ways
because I wanted to do it my way
and have the fun of learning. Yes,
it will take work, perhaps more
than has ever been required of you,
but there are many sources of help
at Louisburg College if you will
just ask. I hope you will pay close
attention during orientation when
we show you all the sources you
can consult when you need assistance.
As your Academic Dean, I am
responsible for Louisburg
College’s academic programs, aca
demic standards and most matters
pertaining to the Faculty. I am
very proud of the academic repu
tation that Louisburg College
enjoys and I am particularly proud
of our Faculty. I enjoy working
with them and no doubt, you will
like them too. They are well-
trained, student-oriented people
who enjoy teaching. You should
respect them and their position,
but you need not fear them. You
will find that they care about you.
They will require you to live up to
high standards, but they will give
you much assistance in attaining
the learning goals they set. If you
do your part, you will find that
they will prepare you for your fu
ture academic pursuits.
Louisburg College offers many
enrichment opportunities outside
the classroom: art, sports, drama,
music, concerts, chapel programs,
clubs, dances, talent shows, news
paper, literary magazine, student
govenmient, guest speakers, films,
etc. I encourage you to look care
fully at the total College program
and to get involved. Such activi
ties will add greatly to your
education and to the enjoyment of
your college days. So, take part in
and attend events that you think
you would like and even some that
do not seem interesting. You might
be surprised.
I feel fortunate to have been a
part of Louisburg College for six
teen years. It is truly a special place
doing special things in special ways.
I know you also will enjoy being a
part of LOU-U, and I hope you will
develop a life-long attachment.
A. Time For Change!
By J. Craig Eller
Hello, and welcome to the
Louisburg College experience.
Together we (the faculty, staff,
administration, and students) are
starting out on an educational
journey which will last for about
nine months. You, the students,
will be considerably changed at
the end of the journey; the rest of
us will change, also, but not as
obviously nor as much.
Let’s think about change for a
moment. Some people believe
that all of us naturally resist change,
particularly change that we do not
understand. Yet in this case, we
have all agreed that change is in
order: improved study habits, more
mature ways of thinking, new
friends and a change of attitude.
The wonderful thing is that you
have the capability of directing
and facilitating all of this change
for yourself as it fits your personal
goals and aspirations.
Some of you will have entered
college with labels that were stuck
on you years ago by your friends,
classmates or teachers. Those
labels are invisible to everyone
here and are easily shed. No one is
going to judge you or classify you
by what you did or didn’t do in
high school or earlier. The record
that you accumulate from here on
will determine how you are viewed
by your teachers, classmates, and
future employees.
In student affairs we are
committed to helping you to bring
about the most positive, helpful
and personally rewarding
experience possible at Louisburg
College. Whether in residence
hall life, food service, health,
security, extra-curricular activities,
or programming, your concerns
J. Craig Eller, Dean of Students
are our concerns. We welcome
you and look forward to getting to
know you.
