THE STUDENT VOICE
VOL. 55, NO.l September 30, 1997
Moving in...and Moving On.. . by B«c)iy Kroger
Since mid-August, freshman students all
across the world moved into college resi
dence halls. For many young adults, this
was their first time being on their own. A
majority of students see their freshman
year as the beginning of a new life. Col
lege has a lot to offer, even though you are
actually suppose to be studying. It is a
great opportunity to meet new people,
have "freedom", and further your educa
tion all at the same time.
As a freshman, I must admit, at first it
was a bit difficult getting use to living with
someone new ana not naving my mmily
nearby. As I interviewed fellow freshmen
some admitted that this was the first time
they had to do their own laundry and clean
their own room. Felicia Gill, a freshman
in Kenan, is lucky, her family lives merely
five minutes away. As the first week went
by, things became slightly easier. Felicia
said, "the worst thing about Orientation
week was that it was so hot."
When not attending class or doing home
work you can find Beth Earp listening to
music, hanging out with her friends, or at
tending play rehearsal. When asked about
the transition to college she said, "I love the
freedom of making my own decisions." I
agree with Beth, but when you have freedom
you are also responsible for the choices you
make and the consequences.
Now that many are on their own, the source
of money may be a huge dilemma. Many
students want to make sure they are "getting
their moneys' worth." While interviewing
Trina Myers, of Kenan, she said, "I really
think that I am getting my money's worth.
Instructors here are very helpful but they do
give overwhelming amounts of homework."
Living on campus and away from home can
be an adjustment for some. As a freshmen, it
has been difficult living seven hours away
from my family and friends. Since I have
been here at Louisburg, I have made new
friends which has helped me make a
smoother transition to college life. I plan to
manage my time efficiently and concentrate
on my class work.
