League standout Cale envisions ACC lead in thefts November 9, 1976 BLACK INK 7 By RAY PERRY Sports Writer Bobby Cale must be somewhat of a legend in the hamlet of Middletown, Del. During his prep career at Middletown High, he was all-state in football and baseball two years in a row. His senior year he was concensus All-America. “It really doesn’t mean that much,” said Cale. “The competition up there isn’t as good as it is here in North Carolina.” But don’t be fooled by Cale’s sincere modesty. He has demonstrated his football talents with the stellar per formance he gave in the Nor thwestern game. Cale picked off two passes and received the game bail for his out standing play. The ball is in his room, on a boolBhelf, partially hidden from view. He was also named ACC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts. “I was surprised at being named Player of the Week,” he said. “It’s no big thing. I really should have had four interceptions that day.” Cale started in six games as a freshman, and the sophomore now gives a solid performance each game. “I just try to help the team in any way I can.” In light of all the success he has joyed, it’s ironic that football is not his favorite sport. “Actually, basketball is my favorite sport,” stated the industrial relations major. “I like baseball, too. But I guess football is my best sport.” When asked to comment on the lackluster performances turned in by the Tarheel secondary this fall, Cale responded, “Coach Dooley says we’re the best secondary he’s had. I guess it’s hard to see why from the stands. But people should remember there are eleven men playing defense, and it takes eleven men to stop the pass and eleven men to stop the run.” Cale continued, “We concentrate on stopping what the other team does best. If they have a good running game, then we concentrate on stop ping the run. If they have a superior passing attack, then we try to stop the pass.” Despite the disappointing losses to Missouri and N.C. State, Cale is confident that the team can bounce back and win its last two games. “If we can cut down the mistakes, then we should be ahright,” he said. What is Bobby Cale’s goal for the remainder of the season? He sheepishly replied, “I wouldn’t mind leading the ACC in interceptions.” Brooks Cr Son Inc. Construction Co.
