Volume 14 Number, 2 BLACK INK The essence of freedom is understanding BLACK STUDENT MOVEMENT OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill September 1. 1981 BSM raises $640, gains 282 members after dance JOHN HINTON Editor The Black Student Movement r^alsed $640 and satisfied the Campus Governing Coun- cil'i $600 membership dues requirement for the 1981-82 year, BSM Chairperson Mark Canady said. During the spring, the CGC sets a dollar amount of dues the BSM must raise in order to obtain future funds. The organization col lected the required $600 and gained 282 members following the semester's first dance, which was sponsored by the BSM membership committee, Canady said at a special BSM meeting Aug. 22. "In past years, the money raised from membership drives had to go towards the CGC dues category in our budget," Canady said. "Since we satisfied that requirement, we can spend that money on other project." Smith Turner and Allen Russell, BSM membership chairpersons, said they were pleased with the amount of money raised and with the Initial number of members. "The dance was a success because it was the first one of the semester in Great Hall and many people did not have many things to do on that Thursday night (Aug. 20)." Turner said. "It was a fair deal when you look at it," Russell said. "The jam was really free be cause the people paid only for the mem bership and not the jam." Turner and Russell said the ultimate goal of their membership committee is to sign up at least 600 students as BSM members this academic year. In other business, the central committee passed four amendments to the BSM con stitution. The constitution will indule two aspects about membership — any person participating in a BSM subgroup must be a BSM member, and the membership dues will remain $2 year round. An amendment also clarified the role of Mi^BSM. The amendment states that Miss BSM must have at least a 2.0 grade point average, serve as an ex-officio member of the central committee, coordinate a public service project, and serve as hostess for the BSM. Sandra Tate, the 1980-81 Miss BSM said this amendment will clear up the vague ideas some students have about the roll of Miss BSM. The central committee passed an amend ment outlining nine rules to the treasury laws for the BSM. In further action, the committee approved an amendment naming the United Christian Fellowship as an official repre sentative at BSM meeting. UCF Chairperson, Jacqueline Overton will serve as UCF repre sentative at BSM meetings. Canady concluded the meeting by outlin ing four BSM directives for this school year. "The BSM should have more community involvement, more members and mem bership involvement, more student aware ness on campus, and an increase of com- munltive abilities by the BSM." Graduation!
