BSM supports black
police force
by WILTON HYMAN
BSM Vice President
“In 1986,669 out of 847 service and
maintenance jobs were held by blacks.
Only 15 out of 212 executive, ad
ministrative and managerial positions
were held by blacks. In 1986, only one
black out of 110 new faculty members
were hired. These statistics show the
university’s Affirmative Action plan, first
implemented in 1973, has failed.”
Another failure of the university’s
Affirmative Action plan is illustrated in
the University of North Carolina Police
Department, where 12 new officer posi
tions, created this past June, were filled
by Robert Sherman, director of security
services, without allowing all qualified of
ficers an equal opportunity to apply for
these promotions.
These examples of blatant discrimina
tion and favoritism exist not only here at
UNC, but all over our State of North
Carolina.
Thursday, October 29, the Black Stu
dent Movement protested these
discriminatory practices which have been
allowed to exist at UNC. We focused on
the charges of favoritism and racism
against the University of North Carolina
Police Department.
Speakers for the rally included James
Gibbs, president of the UNC chapter of
the NAACP and Joel Segal of Action
Against Apartheid. Chris Harring, a
former UNC police officer, was sched
uled to speak but was subpoenaed to ap
pear in court October 29 concerning his
suit filed against the UNC Police Depart
ment. The final speaker was Kenneth
Perry, president of the Black Student
Movement.
After conclusion of the speeches,
three members of the Ebony
Readers/Onyx Theater performed
dramatic interpretations of literature deal
ing with racial discrimination.
