Hash said her view of the world and her family motivated her to embrace this particular service project. It saddens her to see black children struggling and behind in today’s educational sys tems. Along with her service project, Hash plans to help the other candidates perform their service projects as well. Hash wants everyone to know that she is available and plans to have office hours during which she will be open for any comments and concerns. Above all, Hash feels that black people should never lose contact with the black community. Brandon Lofton was chosen from two capable candidates as the new Mr. BSM. At the forum before the election, Lofton expressed his concerns and plans for the 2000 Black Student Movement. Lofton’s service project, “Deconstructing the American Dream,” is planned to be an exciting three-day project where participants, first, discover “what it means to be black?” The second day focuses on constructing a new definition of the “American Dream.” The final day focuses on creating a plan of action where the participants “construct a new peo ple.” Essentially, Lofton believes that “Mr. BSM should not be a title, but a position.” Both Mr. and Ms. BSM have notable plans for the campus commu nity If you are looking forward to participating in any of their events, dates have not been announced, but keep a look out for fliers and postings. The two new representatives of the Black Student Movement promise to represent us well and better our community. We have much to look forward for in the next year. Congratulations and best of luck to our new Mr. and Ms. BSM!! Demetrice Smith may be reached at dsmith@email.unc.edu November 2000 10
