Hinton James: The Penitentiary
With all the construction going on in the area, it
seems that Chapel Hill should change its name to
Construction Hill. I mean, with the renovations
to the Student Union and the building of four new
dorms on South Campus, there are very few
places on campus that do not have some con
struction going on. All this construction on cam
pus has really caused an inconvenience for almost
everyone on campus.
However, there is one place on campus that has
been inconvenienced the most. Hinton James
really got the worst end of this whole construc
tion thing. Honestly, being the most southern
dorm on campus already made Hinton James
way out of the way. Then, they just had to put
that fence up, supposedly for the students' safety.
However, it honestly seemed like the fence was
put up just to separate Hinton James from the rest
of the dorms on South Campus. Like prison

inmates, students that stay in HJ were isolated
from the rest of campus. Look at the
long hike we have to make just to get
from HJ to Chase in order to eat. And
let's not start talking about the hike
that we had to make if we wanted to
visit a friend in Morrison. The fence
around Hinton James also was an
inconvenience to anyone that wanted
to come visit a friend in HJ. With the
detour, walking to the Main Quad
would almost be closer than going to
HJ.
Luckily, the fence that kept students
in HJ from crossing the street in front
of Ehringhaus was taken down (after
the students in HJ tried to take it down
themselves). Honestly, it probably had nothing to
do with the students' constantly destroying the
fence, but we can't help but think that we had a
little to do with it.

E-haus: It's Not So Bad
As a two-year resident of Carolina's luxurious
South Campus, I am constantly surrounded by
what seems to be a never-ending phenomena,
construction. All over South Campus, from
Ehringhaus, to Hinton James, to Morrison, bus
loads of men come early in the morning and
begin yet another day's work constructing new
