We’ll pass the word along to alumni and friends of UNCW. 1960s Gaye Newber Hudson ’67 will com plete her doctorate in music education at Indiana University in November 1984. She is married to Loyd Hudson, the first music department chairman at Wilming ton College and UNCW, and they have three children. Mrs. Hudson is employed by the Monroe County Community School Corporation and Dr. Hudson by Indiana University. 1970s Kirk Grumpier ’70 of Tideland Food Sales, Inc. in Hampstead, NC is ad vocating a new taste treat. He is one of 42 brokers who sell catfish nationally for Delta Catfish Processors Inc. of Mississip pi, the largest catfish "farm” in the United States. Philip W. McGumbee ’72 has been transferred to the Rocky Mount main of fice of Wachovia Bank & Trust Co. as retail banking manager. He has worked in Wachovia’s Raleigh, Fayetteville and Lumberton offices, most recently serving as branch manager of the Biggs Park Of fice and assistant vice president in Lumberton. Dorothy Smith Odom ’73 had two short stories included in an anthology Road Map in June 1984. The anthology was edited by Judy Hogan and published by the Carolina Wren Press of Chapel Hill. James L. Rich ’73 has relocated to Greensboro as consultant to the state’s adaptive physical education program. Rich’s office will be at N.C. A&T Univer sity from which he will work with all 142 local education agencies in the state. Greg A. Willett ’73 is a credit represent ative in GMAC’s Virginia Beach, Virginia branch office. Willett began working for GMAC in Wilmington via the UNCW Career Planning & Placement Office prior to his graduation eleven years ago. David F. Sandlin ’76 has been named vice president and Wilmington city execu tive of the North Carolina State Savings & Loan Corp. of Southern Pines. Sandlin was a professional baseball player with the St. Louis National Baseball Club and worked for Wachovia Bank & Trust Co. and Pioneer Savings & Loan prior to this appointment. Tom Canady ’76 and wife Susan an nounce the birth of Thomas Robeson Canady on August 6. The Canady’s live in Enfield, NC where Tom is director of member service for Halifax Electric Mem bership Corporation. Will H. Loughlin ’77 is a Lieutenant and Operations Officer for the UNCW Campus Police. Randy Ourt ’77 and Janet Russ Ourt announce the birth of Lauren Meredith on September 5. Randy is the Assistant State Manager/Regulatory Relations (North and South Carolina) for AT&T Communica tions. Randy and Janet reside in Char lotte. Joseph William Davis ’78 biology graduate, earned a D.C. degree in 1983 from Life Chiropractic College, Marietta, GA. He is licensed to practice in New Jersey and North Carolina, and is an associate with Guerry Chiropractic Cen ter, Wilmington, NC. Gretta Lint ’79 is a reporter and photog rapher for the Observer News Enterprise, Newton, NC. During hurricane Diana, she was South Carolina’s public relations spokesperson for the American Red Cross. Michael McGuinness ’79, J. D. 1983, is an L.L.M. candidate at George Wash ington University National Law Center, Washington, DC. He is an attorney with the U.S. Department of the Interior, and practices labor relations and real estate law. Cynthia Singleton Williamson ’79 and husband Mark announce the birth of Bradley Mark on June 29. Cynthia is a registered nurse at New Hanover Memo rial Hospital and Mark is a relief super visor and clerk with the Wilmington office of the U.S. Postal Service. 1980s Kevin Werle and Neva Godwin Werle '80 announce the birth of daughter Sara Elizabeth born in March. Kevin obtained his masters degree at Ohio University and is currently employed as a petroleum geologist for Amoco Production Co., Houston, TX. Neva served as an assistant geologist with the same company prior to her daughter’s birth. Stephen A. Wright ’80 was promoted to contract specialist trainee with the U.S. Postal Service, working in the Pro curement Service Office in Greensboro, NC. Steve and wife Sharon have two children. Jackie S. Wilson ’81 married Cameron S. Zurbruegg October 1, 1983. They live in Charlotte, NC where Jackie is an ac countant for Trammell Crow Company and Cameron is director of sales for Guest Quarters Hotels. Robert E. Calder ’81 graduated from UNC’s School of Law in May 1984 and passed the N.C. Bar Examination in July 1984. He is in a real estate practice part- today Wilmington g nership with the firm of Calder and Calder in Wilmington, NC. Steven Tyrus Cobb (Ty) ’81 is employed by Consolidated Seafood and Packing Co. as a bookkeeper/accountant. He is married to the former Catherine Ann CuUins ’84 who manages the Seven Seas Apartments at Kure Beach. The Cobbs reside at Carolina Beach. Libby Streb Leeuwenburg ’81 of Wilmington has been named field direc tor for New Hanover, Columbus, Bruns wick and Pender counties by the Girl Scout Council of Coastal Carolina. She is a former assistant director of the Girls Club of Wilmington. Darlene D. Paes ’82 graduate with Associate of Arts Degree in Nursing, graduated in May 1984 from UNC- Greensboro with B.S. in Nursing and is employed by Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, NC. Charles G. Farrar ’83 is employed with Electronic Data Systems, Inc., Reston, VA, where he will be involved in corporate recruiting and marketing development. Michael Plante ’83 philosophy and religion graduate, presented a lecture on creationism at UNCW on September 6. Plante graduated magna cum laude from UNCW and presently attends Harvard University School of Divinity, pursuing the master’s degree in theological studies. Second Lieutenant Jerry M. Swanner ’83 has received the Army Achievement Medal for outstanding accomplishments and acts of courage. Swanner is an infan tryman with the 82 Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC. Teresa Ann Cook ’82 and Ellis Eugene Williams ’83 were married July 29 in Wilmington. Deaths John Patrick Miller ’79 died of injuries received in an automobile accident in Prince George, MD on September 22. Miller was All-South for the UNCW Seahawks in 1978 and 1979. He was employed with First Citizens Bank in Charlotte. Bobby Charles Raynor ’61 died August 16. He was a planning engineer for Bechtel Corporation at Gaithersburg, MD. Raynor was the 1961 recipient of the Hoggard Medal presented in recognition of the most improvement shown during a student’s years at the university. He was originally from Leland. Ms. Brantley graduated from The University of Georgia with a degree in journalism, and has held positions in public relations, communica tions and administration. Jean Farmer, former publications officer, has relocated to Richmond, Virginia and is employed as director of publications and public relations for the Professional Picture Framers Association. Faculty Doings Robert T. Brown and Lee A. Jackson of the psychology department have had two articles, "Crucial Experiments in Psychology” and "Group Problem Solv ing,” published in the new four-volume Encyclopedia of Psychology published by Wiley-Interscience. "The Use of Microcomputers in the Of fice of Research Administration at the University of North Carolina at Wilming ton” was explained by ORA director. Dr. John J. Manock, at the recent joint Midwest/Southem Sections Meeting of the Society of Research Administrators in Cincinnati. Dr. Ralph Brauer, director of the Insti tute for Marine Biomedical Research, has been appointed to the editorial board of the Journal of Applied Physiology, Res piratory, Environmental and Exercise Phy siology. Shiva Saksena of the department of mathematical sciences co-authored a paper, "Best Unbiased Estimators for the Parameters of a Two-Parameter Pareto Distribution',” published in Metrika- International Journal for Theoretical and Applied Statistics, Volume 31. Dr. James McGowan, director of grad uate studies, was one of seven new members recently inducted by the NC Humanities Committee. The Humanities Committee, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, meets three times a year to make grants to pro grams that increase public understanding of the humanities. R. O. Walton, director of financial ser vices, has been appointed acting vice chancellor for business affairs. Jean Farmer, former publications of ficer and editor of UNCW today, was recently presented the Excellence in De sign Certificate by the Beckett Paper Company. The award was given for out standing professional achievement in her standards of design in the creative use of printing papers. The North Carolina Board of Science and Technology has awarded a grant of $8,098 to Dr. Carl Lundeen of the biological sciences department to develop a laboratory course in Recombinant DNA Techniques. The course, scheduled to begin spring semester, 1985, will utilize cloning and analysis systems as students are taught methods for growing and isolating cloning vectors, for cleaving DNA into fragments which can be moved from one vector to another, and for select ing constructed molecules. The aw’ard w'ill provide funds to purchase laboratory equipment and supplies. Clark Holtzman of the English depart ment has had a poem, "The Wreck of the Ice Cream Truck,” accepted for publica tion in Negative Capability, for Spring 1985. His chapbook of poems. The King of Spain, will be published in September by Peloria Press. Charles Fort of the English faculty has been invited to participate in a Writers and Readers Series of workshops spon sored by the Friends of Weymouth, Inc. to be held this fall in Southern Pines. UNCW department of health, phy sical education and recreation receiv ed an award of appreciation from the New Hanover County Special Olympics Com mittee in recognition of the department’s support in the Special Olympics. UNCW school of nursing receiv ed approval of its baccalaureate nursing program by the N.C. State Board of Nurs ing.
