Wagoner model Marine Expo ’85 tee shirts. Nine action packed days will make up Ma rine Expo '85, the area’s first effort to focus attention on its varied marine resources. The event is scheduled for September 28-October 6 in Wilmington to highlight the uniqueness of the Cape Fear area and its marine-related resources. Almost all Marine Expo activities are free to the public; some events require preregistration. Chairing Marine Expo is Dr. James Merritt, associate professor and chair man of UNCW’s department of biological sciences. Beginning the activities will be open house at the State Port at Wilmington from noon to 5 p.m., Saturday, September 28. Visitors may tour the port by bus or ride on the Cape Fear River in tugboats. Water sports will be high lighted during Marine Expo with daily sailing regattas and windsurfing races at Wrightsville Beach. Scientific and educational aspects of ma rine-related resources will be emphasized through special exhibits, lectures and presen tations around New Hanover County. School tours of the Marine Resources Center will take place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 1 and Thursday, October 3. Marine- related exhibits will be at UNCW’s Trask Col iseum, New Hanover County Library, New Hanover County Museum, and Cape Fear Tech. UNCW Trustees elect officers Three new members of the Board of Trustees at UNCW were sworn in at the quar terly trustee meeting held in July at UNCW. New trustees are John D. Merritt, vice presi dent, government and public affairs for Har dee’s Food Systems Inc., of Rocky Mount; Dr. Eugene Edward Wright Jr., physician from Fayetteville; and Justin Raphael, president of Alexanders Department Store Inc. which operates Justins Clothing Store and Surf "N” Stuff, Wilmington. Merritt and Wright were elected by the UNC Board of Governors. Wright will serve until June 30,1987 and was elected to fill the unexpired term of Julia W. Taylor of Durham who resigned. Raphael was appointed to a four-year term by Gov. James Martin. Trustees re-elected by the Board of Gov ernors to serve a second four-year term were John J. Burney Jr. and B. D. Schwartz, both of Wilmington, and Margaret F. Heyward, Charlotte. Appointed by the governor to an other four-year term was Dr. John B. Cod ington. Burney was re-elected to a third term as chairman; Schwartz was elected as vice-chair- man, and Elizabeth Cameron of Wilmington as secretary. John Warlick Jr. of Jacksonville and F. Pete Fensel of Wilmington were elect ed at large members of the executive commit tee of the board. Paul Bell, president of the UNCW student government association, will serve as an ex-officio member of the board. Retiring members of the Board of Trustees are Dr. Hubert A. Eaton of Wilmington, and Clifton L. Moore Jr. of Burgaw. John D. Merritt was born in Fayetteville, graduated from New Hanover High School, and received a bachelor’s degree in history from UNC Chapel Hill in 1972. Prior to join ing Hardee’s Food Systems Inc. in 1982, Mer ritt served for 10 years on Capitol Hill as ad ministrative assistant to Congressman Char lie Rose. Eugene Edward Wright Jr., M.D. was born in Wilmington, and graduated from George Washington High School in Denver, Colorado in 1969. He received the bachelor of science degree in engineering from Princeton Univer sity, and received his medical degree from Duke University Medical School in 1978. He practices medicine in Fayetteville with Cum berland Internal Medicine, P.A. Justin Raphael moved to Wilmington from New York City in 1950. He received the bach elor’s degree in business administration in 1949 from the City College of City University of New York. In addition to working in the retail clothing business, Raphael taught business at then Wilmington College in 1964. (L-R) New trustee members John D. Astronaut Scott Carpenter will be the Ma rine Expo ’85 featured speaker with a free public lecture at 8 p.m., Tuesday, October 1 at Kenan Auditorium at UNCW. A dynamic pioneer of modern exploration. Carpenter has the distinction of being the only human ever to penetrate both outer and inner space, thereby acquiring the dual title, astronaut/ aquanaut. A national workshop on artificial reefs on Monday, September 30, and a marine science symposium and marine research forum on Wednesday, October 2, will take place at UNCW’s University Union. Complementing Marine Expo ’85 will be Riverfest 1985 on Saturday, October 5 and Sunday, October 6 in downtown Wilmington. Exhibits, food booths, continuous entertain ment, and fireworks will provide entertain ment for young and old. Marine Expo ’85 is sponsored by the City of Wilmington, New Hanover County, the Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, The University of North Carolina at Wil mington, and the State of North Carolina. Shinn, professor of philosophy and religion at UNCW, was selected as a semi-finalist in the 1985 Professor of the Year competition sponsored by the Council for Ad vancement and Support of Education (CASE). The award recognizes achievement in teach ing, scholarship and service to the profession and institution. Twenty-five semi-finalists were chosen from 'Z56 entries submitted from universities in the United States and Canada. Shinn was the only professor so honored within the 16-campus UNC system, and one of two semi-finalists from North Carolina. Shinn joined the UNCW faculty in 1967. His service and dedication to the campus range from serving as curator of UNCW’s Museum of World Cultures to establishing in 1972 the Albert Schweitzer International Prizes, the first international prizes of its kind in the United States and held every four years at UNCW. His teaching excellence was recog nized with the UNCW Board of Trustees Teaching Excellence Award in 1981. The many letters of nomination from students and faculty in support of Shinn’s achievements were unanimous in recognizing his "dedication to teaching, respect for learn ing, and sincere love for students.” Shinn received his Ph.D. in medieval church history from Duke University. At UNCW he teaches philosophy and religion and Old Testament literature. Congratulations, Jerry, on an honor well deserved.
