C., OCTOBER, 1964 NO. 2 The President Speaks OPEN LETTER TO STUDENTS With the publication of the first issue of the college newspaper on the first day of school, Gaston College was off to a most auspicious beginning. Enrolling a total of 696 students, the college crowded its temporary facilities to al most a breaking point. Student interest and spirit has shown itself in many ways. Student government has been voted in and student elections are not far off. The newspaper is now well estab lished. Interest in student clubs of various kinds is evident. Sales of shirts and jackets with the school emblem have excelled expectations. Speaking for the staff and faculty of Gaston College, I wish to express my sincere gratitude and congratulations to the student body of G.C.C. for the magnificent way in which you have accepted the additional problems faced in our temporary facility. Your spirit will go far in making G.C.C. the fine institution of higher education all of us have dream ed it would be. Most sincerely, C. Robert Benson, President Circle "W' To Form The Circle K, the college equiva lent to high school Key Club is in the process of being formed at G.C.C. The Circle K Club is not a social fraternity; it is an organization for college men operating on the campus and is similiar to Kiwanis and other service clubs. It is a leadership and character-building club which serves the campus and | the community. The Circle K is a unique organi zation. It is an opportunity for college meri because it provides h means for the same type of lead ership in a college community which service clubs are giving in the business and professional world. CARL STEWART, LLB, SPEAKS AT BSU CARL STEWART BY TERESA .lORD.AN Looking for an opportunity to get better acquainted with fellow collegc students ? Looking for something different and worth while? Here’s the answer — the Baptist Student Union, better known as B. S. U. This organiza tion is well-known to college stu dents everywhere. Although it is sponsored by the Baptists, interest ed students of all denominations are welcome. At the meetings, special guests are invited to lead discussions about subjects of in terest to college students. Mr. Carl Stewart, Attorney-at- law, was guest speaker at the last meeting, October 25. Mr. Stewart is not only a popular speaker among young people, but he is also qualified. Mr. Stewart «as a Firestone Scholar from 1954 to 19.58. He graduated from Duke University in 1958, was a regional law scholar from 1958 to 1961, and received his law degree in 1961. While at Duke, Mr. Stewart was president of Phi Beta Kappa scholastic fra ternity, member of the debating team, Atlantic Conference de bate champion, and president of the law school student body. At the present, he is a law partner in the firm of Sanders and Stewart. One of the highlights of the B. S. U. is the B. S. U. Convention. This year it is to be held Novem ber 6, 7, and 8 at High Point Col lege. B. S. U. members from col leges all over the state w'ill be present. Mr. Perreault, Western North Carolina B. S. U. Director, is help ing organize our union. Our spon sors from Gaston College are Dr. John Roueche and Professor Bruce Trammell. These men are very willing to help us and have gone out of their way to do so. Student Council Holds Meeting The first meeting of the tenta tive student council was held on October 8th. Dr. John Roueche presided and was assisted by Mr. Claude Davis, head of the English Department. The first order of business was to read several college consitut- tions. These documents will be dis cussed and from them will come ideas for Gaston College’s own con stitution. .A.lso the committee will work on a student handbook. Elected as co-chairmen of the committee were Sandra Yar borough and Steve Wallace. Judy .A.iken was elected secretary and Sandra Bumgardner. “Skippy” Perry, and Jim Dickson were plac ed on a sub-committee to write for student handbooks. .■Another meeting was called for October 20th.
