(Continued from Pg. 1) Eventually there will be nine two story dorm itories that will hold a to tal of 144 students. If necessary a third story will be added to each dor mitory so that they will hold 216 students. There will also be a student lounge built after the first two or three dorms go up. The lounge will be built to supply the needs of the ultimate number of students^ _so that space or availability will be no problem in the future. The lot on which the dorms are to be built will have ample space for parking and grassy and shady areas for sports or relaxation. Student demand for dormitory space is really no problem since it only takes forty-five days to construct one of these dorms. The first dormitory will be all male but the editor of the Gas Light has talked with represen tatives of Mar-Sel, Inc. concerning female forms and, if the demand war- rents it, the all-girl dorms will be available. G.C. of The Good Old Days The original Gaston College existed in nearby Dallas in the 1880’s. The college opened in the fall of 1886 with 412 stu dents. The tuition for a term of four and a half months was 120 dollars. This included room, board, water, fuel, wash- ing'and ironing. Students had to be in bed by 10 o’clock p.m. each day and up by 6 o’clock a.m. Students were _ re quired to attend devotion al services each morning and evening and church services twice on Sunday. The dress of the stu dents was plain. Extrav agance in dress or jewel- ery was not permitted. The old college was one of the first co-education- al schools, a practice frowned upon at the time. However, professor Mar cus Lafyette Little, the colleges first president, held his ground. The school was forced to close in 1905, due to lack of funds. The old building burned to the ground in 1927 after serving for a while as a grammar school, a high school, and as a cite for mercantile stores. Now, only a state his torical marker is left of the old college. The Beat Goes On Library Club News The enrollment at G. C. as compared witk the enrollment of last year seems to have pleased the administration. Although there has been a de crease in certain areas this is coupled with a much sharper increase in other departments. For exam ple the C. P. figures stand as; 1967 C. P. 1,002 1968 C. P. 1,034 The increase of thirty two students over last year by the C. P. may be explained by the rise in student population. The Technical division; how ever, had a considerable decrease. It has been suggested that the cause may be from the tight job market situation. Many, many students are foregoing their education for two or possibly three years in order to satisfy the labor^market. The more outstanding increase is sought by the Vocational Department at G. C. The figures stand as follows: 1967 Voc. 246 1968 Voc. 264 This increase of seven per cent may be deducted also by the rise in student population, but others seem to think this seven per cent rise coupled by last years of six or seven per cent and the speculat ed seven per cent of the coming year is the cause of a more popular course at Gaston College. The Vocational program may be completed in twelve months as compared to a possible four years in College Parallel. This allows a student to work only at what interest him as; air conditioning or refrigeration. This teaches the student a^ skill in a comparatively short time in order for him to go out and start work immediately. There are other reasons for this favored course along which the money making potetialties can not be deflected. So, heres to the speculation of an annually six or seven per cent increase student population.
