The Gas Light
October, 1969
Sports Department
By Charlie Hall and
Charlie Hodge
The Sports Department of the
Gaslight is interested in not only
reporting the news but in
furthering student understanding
of athletics at Gaston College.
The opinions expressed in the
student poll showed a definite
interest, but a lack of knowledge.
WHAT DO YOU KNOW
ABOUT SPORTS AT GASTON
COLLEGE?
“Not much, but I’d like to.”
“Not a thing!”
“Nothing.”
“They got a basketball team ...
and a baseball team ... Baseball
team’s pretty good I heard.”
One smart girl replied, “Wliy
ask me? Em not going out for
football.”
WOULD YOU LIKE TO
KNOW MORE ABOUT THE
SPORTS SCENE?
“Yea, how 'bout intramurals?”
“Nobody tells me nothing!”
“The newspaper ought to
inform the students.”
Who is responsible? Who is to
be blamed for many students not
knowing the varsity sports being
offered, or for that fact, the
intramurals.
Is the newspaper at fault? Does
a lack of information cause the
void between student and the
athletic program, OR, perhaps
students simply don’t care enougli
to find out???
Two Intramural Sports
Two intramural sports, which
are expected to draw many
participants this year, are Hag
football and bowling.
Flag Kootball, though not as
rough on the participant as regular
football, is still just as competitive
and just as exciting as regular
football. The main differences
between football and fiag football
are that only 6 men arc on each
team and the ball carrier is not
tackled. Six to eight teams arc
expected to participate with the
winners and runners-up receiving
trophies. Anyone wishing more
informatioi> should contact either
Coach Brooks or Coach
Burroughs.
Bowling will take place on
Tuesday nights at Major League
Lanes in Gastonia at 9:00 p.m.
Anyone wishing to participate
may form his own team or else he
can contact Coach Burroughs and
he will be glad to see that you get
placed on a team already formed.
At the beginning of each quarter
new leagues will be formed.
Basketball
Pre-seast)n prospects for this
years basketball team are
excellent. Barring any difficulties,
the team should have an
extremely good season and it has
good chances of going undefeated
in regular conlcrertce play.
Overall, we had a 21-11 record,
but in conference play we were
defeated only once. Gaston
College captured second-place in
confereiice play with a record of
‘)-l.
Isothermal was the team who
heat us. so what do we do about
this? How does hiring their
basketball coach sound for a
start? Not bad, huh? lie is
llerschell Walsh and during his
two years at isothcrnial he lost
only TWO games during regular
conference play.
We have only three returning
players: Ronnie Davis, Charlie
Hamilton, and Beirut Wall. Some
players who look good are:
Jimmy Crone from Clinton, Ky.
His team was the best in the state
with a 29-2 record and he was the
leading high school scorer for two
years;
Barry Smith is from Calvert
(’ity, Ky.; and he was the leading
scorer from Ni>rth Marshall High
School;
.lew cl Williams is from
Loinsville, Ky. and his Thomas
Jefferson High School was former
state champion;
Lloyd Taylor, who played year

New Sport
At G.C.
A new varsity sport has been
added on at Gaston College. This
sport is Cross-Country. Since it is
a new sport for Gaston, we have
no returning lettermen. TTiis
means that all positions are wide
open for anyone who is
interested. Anyone wishing to
try-out for the team should
contact Coach Burroughs. Boys
who have been very impressive in
workouts so far are: Charlie Hall,
Barry Faith, and Tim Ellis.
Baseball is perhaps the most
popular varsity sport at Gaston
College. Gaston College were the
champions of the North Carolina
Community College Athletic ,
Conference last year with a
conference record of 9 wins and 1
loss. The team was 14-12 overall.
Although last year’s team was
very outstanding, we are
expecting an even stronger team
this year. Gaston will play a 30 +
game schedule which will include
such schools as Appalachian State,
Wingate College, and Spartanburg
College. Returning lettermen from
last year’s championship team are
Chuck Bralley, Wayne Bean,
Mickey Heafner, Paul Millwood
and Bo Davis, the conference’s
outstanding pitcher. Outstanding
new members of this year’s team Seagle from Lowell, John Colver
will be Allen Lindsey from from Lincolnton, Sam Rumfelt
Cherryville, Rocky Goforth and from Belmont, and John
Wayne Mullinax from Kings Schwartz, who played for Ashley
Mountain, Tommy and John in Gastonia.

We took all the money and all the machines and all the people who used to work in the First Union National Bank at
148 Trade Street and moved. Lock, stock and deposit box. To 120 West Wilkins Street. To a proud, new building.
And to celebrate the occasion, we're asking everybody we know to come to our Grand Opening (once removed}.
There will be free refreshments, free door prizes, and some free advice on why you should be using our bank. If
you're not already. But that's another story.
