©I Vol. xra No. IV Dallas, N.C. February 3, 1978 Janice Bane Is Gaston h did not have the charm of the renound emcee Bob Barker, nor the timeless experience displayed by Bert Parks, but with the abstain- ance of the gala proceedings and flawless beauty, it still contained as much fanfare as if the Miss, Universe Pageant were being held in the same building. The evening of Saturday, January 28 not only marked the first time for a new queen to reign over Gaston College, it also marked the first time that such a proceeding has ever taken place on the campus. It was the first time that a beauty pageant com plete with judges and compe tition among the girls, took the place over the usual method of having the student body name a queen, or “prince” had the entries from last years race won. The idea of having a pageant was an S.G.A. deci sion and one that is hoped not to be a short lived one. The reason behind this being that if Gaston is to keep growing it must maintain activities and events which would be of interest to stu dents and prospective stu dents as well. The program began at 8 o’clock with the pageant’s director Jay Rogers, and the 14 girls doing a dance num ber to the disco theme of “Star Wars.” Rogers, an instructor at Gaston College, is also an advocate of the theatre, dance, and fine arts. It was he who the gave program the theatre effect which he has acquired from his own experience. Judges for the contest were as follows: George Gray-Director of the Gastonia Little Theatre; Mr. and Mrs. Mark Carswell-Carolina State Bank; Joan Baker-Libby Stone School of Modeling; Theabaud Jeffers-Mayor of Gastonia; Robin Heffner- Muscular Dystrophy organi- zation-Miss Wheelchair North Carolina. The judges tallied their votes on the basis of poise, talent, beauty, sportswear, and evening gown competition. From this and a heavy deliberation of nearly half an hour, the group finallv rested upon the decision that Janice Bane would be the new queen for Gaston College. Upon being named queen, Janice was the recipients of 100 dollars cash, and will get to wear the crown for one year. The pageant was full of entertainment provided by not only the contestants but also some not in the pageant. Rogers thrilled the audience with his rendition of a piece from “A Chorus Line”, and surprise guest Sam Scott and some other men from main tenance who held the aud ience in stitches from their crazy antics as the “other” contestants for queen. Pro viding music from the organ during the pageant was Sarah Cantrell. With the coronation of Janice Bane as the new queen, the pageant ended on a happy note that it had become a success, and a note that next year will be even better. Sandra Jenkins Roger Lindsey Brooks, Mann, Barringer Elected Senators Janice Bane Performs To “The Homeconung” The Gaston College Stu dent Government Association (SGA) has started the New Year with a heavy agenda. President Terry Messer be lieves 1978 will be an ex tremely busy year for the SGA and probably its best. The SGA Senate began January with a confirmation and the election of four Senators. At the January 12 session, President Messer’s nomination of Shayne Holt as Secretary was confirmed. Former Senator Gail Steele was reinstated and three new senators were elected: Curtis Brooks, Sandra Mann and Delouise Barringer. The by-laws of the newly formed Psychology Club were approved also. At that same meeting, the Executive Council offered two recommendations con cerning dances at Gaston College. One suggested paid clean-up after dances and the other limited each student to one guest. Senator Pam Hol lar offered an amendment to allow two guests and the Senate approved it, indica ting apparent approval of the recommendations. But the Senators reversed them selves and voted down the recommendations. However, informed sources believe the proposals will be brought up again. In an interview. President Messer said he believes the present state of the SGA is better now that ever, with the SGA office bustling with workers going in and out. Asked about the long-range goals and planned activities of the SGA, Messer men tioned the Spring Week and Gaston College’s role as host of this year’s convention of State Community Colleges. Messer also mentioned the many dances and movies scheduled for 1978. There is speculation that the rock group Mother’s Finest will appear here. Tim Setzer
