Gladiators Win Championship
In one of the more exciting game of the
season, the Coral Reefers came from behind
with a two minute deficit on the clock and
pulled out a one point, 19-18 victory over the
No Names, advancing into the championship
against the Gladiators.
The No Names pressed throughout the
contest but were held back for three plays
inside their own 20 yard line with seconds
remaining on the clock. Time ran out for the
No Names.
Eric Spicer directed three scoring drives for
the Reefers, passing to Clay Carver and Cam
Stewart for two touchdowns and running over
for the third himself.
Whitey Holland, Freddie Dee and Frank
Petty led in scoring for the No Names.
The Coral Reefers weren’t so lucky in the
championship game.
The contest between the Gladiators and the
Reefers was fast moving, but the Gladiators
proved to be the better team as they took the
title with a 24-2 win.
The Reefers held onto a 2-0 first-half lead
going into the final four minutes of action, but
an intercepted pass by Larry Ross ended their
edge. Two plays later, a pass by Ross to Bill
Coble ended with a touchdown, giving the
Gladiators a 6-2 contest.
Another Reefer turnover gave the
Gladiators another touchdown, this time on a
Ross pass to Bobby Johnson. The Gladiators
now led the contest 13-2.
With less than a minute left in the half, the
Reefers were intercepted again. Jack Johnson
took the pass and ran for the touchdown.
Ralph Bumgardner led the Reefers, while
Ross, John Bridges, Bobby and Jack Johnson
and Bill Coble led the Gladiators to the 1982
Championship.

Oops! Faculty Wins
Beautiful fall weather and an enthusiastic
crowd of faculty and staff, as well as over 35
students, highlighted this year’s Faculty-
Student softball game.
The student team was divided into two
groups of 15 players each and the first unit
played the first and third inning of the game
while the second unit played the second and
fourth innings. Each of the 15 players were
allowed to bat and then the team would field 10
players on defense. The Faculty was
represented by 14 players and played under
the same format as the students.
This year’s game was a complete turnabout
from last year’s battle, as the faculty led by
the wizardry of Jimmie Babb and Horace
Cline on the pitching mound and they, along
with middle relief man Dennis Perry, were
victorious over the students —19-7.
Perry, utilizing unfamiliar and confusing
tactics to the pitching profession, kept the
student batters continually guessing, resulting
in their lowest run production of the game. ^
Once at bat, the Faculty unloaded a year’s
frustration on two student pitchers as they
lashed out for 26 hits to even up the two-year
series at one game apiece.
The sponsoring SGA would like to extend
their appreciation to the participating
students and Faculty and Staff for making this
game a memorable event during the Fall
Quarter.
The old men who participated were: Junmy
Walters and Jerry Scott, Maintenance Dept.;
Dennis Perry, Director Occupational
Extension; Don Killian, Social Service
Programs; Wayne Scott, President; Don
Lawrence, Police Science Dept.; Myere
Hambright, Electrical Eng. Tech.; Clau^
Davis English Dept.; Horace Cline, V.P.
Student Services; Jimmie Babb V.P.
Instructional Services; Tom Bennett,
Counselor; Gene Newman, Physical
Education; Keith Lackey, Civil Eng.; and
Troy Huntley, Health and Public Services
Dean.
