Intramural Sports Page Seven Tournaments Planned From Staff Reports The Gaston College Student Government Association along with the North Carolina Community College System will sponsor their annual softball tournament to be held April 9- 10 at Biggerstaff Park in Dallas. Along with this annual event will be a newly formed tennis tournament. The softball tournament will feature one mens’ and one womens’ team from each college. Each team will consist of 15 players. Each college will be allowed to have one male and one female player participate in the tennis tournament. Larry Cagle, an organizer of the softball tournament, recently announced that all those interested in trying out for the team should meet in the Myers Center Auditorium on Monday, March 14 at 2:00 p.m. In the past two years, the men have finished third in the state competition, according to the men’s coach. Gene Newman. Newman, however, stated the “the main purpose of the tournament is to provide an opportunity for the players to play ball competitively against other students.” To be eligible for participation, a student must be enrolled in either the fall or winter quarter, and all players must be enrolled in the spring quarter here at Gaston. The student must also be registered for at least six credit hours and have maintained a 2.0 grade point average. If any student is interested in participating in the tournament and would like further information, go by and see Gene Newman or Larry Cagle, Gary Simpson or a SGA representive. Intramural Bowling Season Comes To A Dramatic Close From Staff Reports Both the “Rolling Stones” and the “Jiffy RoUers” ended their regular season with identical 10-5 records, so they met for a two- game “roll off” for the Gaston College Intramural Bowling Championship. “The Stones”, comprised of Steve Atkins, Carl McAlister, Butch Glenn and Del Wynn, were the the prematch favorites. Wynn and McAlister were also high average bowlers in the men’s division. Danny Black and Wes Long, along with Danny “Jiffy” Smith and Steve Duncan comprised the “Jiffy Rollers.” After it was all over, the Danny ‘ Jiffy Smith and his team had pulled off a 1489 to 1435 total pin victory, capturing the 1983 Intramural Bowling Championship. The real drama came in the high average men’s and women’s competition as McAlister took a 31 pin edge into the final game of the season only to lose his advantage in the 10th frame as Wynn finished with a 178 pin game. Carl spare in the 10th and bowled a strike on his last time up to win tiie competition by one pin, 2213 total pins to Wynn’s 2212. In the women’s division, Marie Huffstetler held off Linda Cunningham, who had bowled a 190 game in her first game, to win the total pin competition by only seven pins. Gaston’s Intramural Bowling Season lasted seven weeks and was played at the Major League Bowling Lanes in Gastonia. 76'ers Take Intramural Basketball Championship From Staff Reports The basketball season started January 12 with five teams fighting for the championship. The regular season ended with the 76’ers (6- 2) leading the field foUowed by the Lakers(4- 4), the Shockers (4-4), the Skywalkers (3-6) and the Gladiators (3-5). The first four place finishers played in the tournament. The Skywalkers winning the fourth seed with a close game win over the Gladiators in a one game playoff. The tournament started with the first seed, the 76’ers, playing the Skywalkers. The Lakers played the Shockers. The 76’ers came out on top though to beat the Skywalkers, while the Lakers outlasted the Shockers in a shootout from the rafters. In the championship finals, the 76’ers edged by the Lakers in a well played, well officiated game that went down to the final seconds before the outcome was known. The 76’ers won 61-57 to take the Gaston College Basketball Intramural Championship. The 76’er team was comprised of Joey Kendrick, Eddie Ford, Bobby Quinn, J.J. grier, Vincent Reid, Dewayne McCorkle, Michael Lewis, Troy Huntley, Harry Malker and his brother Edgar Malker.
