Music Department Much interest is being shown in outstanding pro grams given on the campus and elsewhere by members of our music faculty, outside artists, and students. A lyceum program of merit under the direction of Stephen Morrisett was responsible for bringing outside artists of talent and repute to our campus. Members of the music faculty of Gardner-Webb College have made their contributions to the furtherance of good music. Our choir, composed of forty members under the capable direction of Mr. Morrisett has continued to bring renown and acclaim to the College. Successful radio performances by the faculty and students add further lustre to the achievements of the members of the Music Department, and contributions made by its representatives in church, civic and social groups in our State and adjoining states also further the develop ment of serious music—sacred and secular. On Pounder’s Day the first recital of the season was given by Emmalyn Gamble, now voice instructor, Stephen Morrisett, organist, and Abbie Miller, pianist and accompanist. The Shelby Choral Society under the direction of Joe Hamrick, gave two outstanding performances of Handel’s ‘Messiah” with Mr. Morrisett at the organ. Mrs. Robert Gidney, whom we remember as a lovely artist and capable voice instructor for the past two years at Gardner-Webb, was soprano soloist. Mrs. Joe Hamrick, Arthur Tennant and Woodrow Wall each made notable contributions. In February, an exquisitely beautiful recital was given by Dr. Charles Vardell, Head of the Music De partment at Salem College and James Lersch, violin Instructor at Salem College. Ml-. Morrisett has from time to time added his superb artistry as an organist to the rendition of programs, one of especial enjoyment being that given at a meet ing of the Shelby Branch of the American Association of University Women on our campus. Frances Cuthbert- son. Dean of Women, was gracious hostess to this group. Miss Cuthberteon, though not officially a member of the Music Department, has generously rendered timely and invaluable assistance on many occasions to the furth erance of the activities of the Department. Performances given by the Choir have been most eagerly sought. Under Mr. Morrisett’s direction, it has reached a peak of perfection. The Choir has sung at the Kings Mountain and Sandy Run Associations, the B. S. U. Convention in High Point, the District B. T. U. Convention in Gastonia, the First Baptist Churches in Shelby, Elkin and Marion, and in Spindale, Valdese, and Winston-Salem. The Double Quartet is also active. Several student afternoon recitals have been followed by informal teas given by Misses Gamble and Miller. Evening programs of a more formal nature are being prepared for presentation this spring. An event to which we all look forward with eagerness and great pleasure is a voice recital to be given by Miss Gamble during Commencement Week. Reports reach us of a most favorable reception accorded Miss Gamble by the Cecelia Music Club of Shelby at a recent program which she gave. Miss Gamble’s recital will bring to a close a year of almost unprecedented musical activities at Gardner- Webb Col'.ege. —Abbie Miller ONE OF THE NEW DORMITORIES FOR GIRLS
