PAGE FOUR THE PILOT OCTOBER, 1948 Officials In Review Our first official for the year is Lorene Sams, a very popular stu dent from Belmont, whom you will meet many times on the campus this year in various activities. Lorene, an attractive nineteen year old Sophomore, graduated with honors from Belmont High School in 1947 before entering Gardner- Webb College where she has made an enviable record. An active student on the cam pus, she is second vice president of the B. S. U„ pianist for the Christ ian Volunteer Band, member of the W. A. She also takes an active part in sports, especially basketball, which is her favorite. Lorene is undecided as to where she will enter school next fall has definitely decided on Religious Education as her major. Pallston’s gift to Gardner-Webb, Lou Jean Dedmon (Lou to her classmates) with her pleasing per sonality has become one of the most likeable students on the campus. Lou graduated with the Class of ’47 at Fallston High School before entering Gardner-Webb where she fast became active in campus ac tivities. She is this year vice presi dent of the Student Government, president of the Home Economics Club, and a member of the Marshal Club. Much of her free time is spent sewing, which is her favorite past time with basketball running a close second. She claims as her hob by, collecting pennies. Lou plans to enter Woman’s Col lege at Greensboro next year to con tinue her study in Home Economics, providing a certain fellow on the campus approves. Joe will have go to Guilford next year. Miss Miller comes to us from Owensboro, Kentucky, where she at tended grammar and high school. After graduation from high school, she entered the Cincinnati Conserva tory of Music. She completed her course there, receiving for hei time of study a Bachelor of Mu sic degree and an academic diploma. Being a person who pushes for ward to higher and greater things, she attended summer school in 1948. She received her Master of Music degree. Upon receiving this degree she was elected to membership in Pi Kappa Lambda National Honorary Music Fraternity. This means that we have a music teacher that it, classed with the best in the music profe.ssion. Miss Miller has been with us eleven years and has done much to improve the music of Gardner- Webb. She is constantly being in vited to play for clubs and churches in nearby towns. During her years of Miller has trained many sicians who are a credit to her and Gardner-Webb. Besides teaching piano. Miss Miller teaches three other music courses. Two of these are Harmony and Solfeggio, which are closely related. The other course is Music Appreciation in which the pupils are given a chance to learn to appreciate the higher type of mu- MISS ABBIE MILLER Miss Miller has a hobby, the pro duct of which most people would be interested in. This hobby is the baking of angel food cake. Gardner-Webb has been fortunate . having Miss Miller, and every- le hopes that she will remain with i in the years to come.
