C. 39 High Schoolers Visit Campus by ELEANOR CODGILL On the week-end of March 10, another group of high school seniors, thirty-nine, in number, visited Gar dner-Webb campus. The girls, who were for the most part Beta Club members, were here in acceptance to Miss Starnes’ invitation. The visitors, who arrived on Fi-i- day afternoon, begun their activities at an Irish Party Friday night in the Gardner Building. Saturday morning they were given vocational guidance tests by Dr. EVyer. Satur day afternoon was devoted to a tour of the campus and personal inter views with the faculty members. The activities for Saturday were terminated by a faculty-student bas ketball game. The usual Sunday morning worship service climaxed the girls’ stay on the campus. Mr. Morehead had previ ously contributed generously to the planetarium there. Interested in the development of well rounded citi zens, he is establishing this fund for the education of boys who have out standing moral and intellectual characteristics. There is no limita tion as to the course of studies that the candidates must pursue. At the present time, there are no scholarships being awarded to high school graduates, but to graduates of junior and senior colleges in North Carolina. Each approved in stitution is to appoint a committee to nominate candidates for con sideration for these awards. Gardner-Webb has the privilege of nominating as many as five can didates. These persons will later be invited to Chapel Hill for additional testing, and a central committee of the foundation will make the awards which amount to approximately $1500 each. The local committee is comprised of Chairman Phil Elliott, Mrs. Doro thy Hamrick, Mrs. Elma H. Pollock, Dr. Robert A. Dyer, and Mr. H. C. Dixon. Walker, Gastonia; Jean McSwain, Lattimore, Sara Kincaid, Kings Mountain; Wanda Ross, Nancy Ross, Morganton; Geraldine Woody, Phil lis Harris, Ruth Secrest, Drexel; Mary Lon Caudle, Thomasville; and Pherdelia Williard, Mt. Holly. Hendricks Writes Weekly Column The Rev, Garland Hendricks, di- ' rector of Gardner-Webb department of Community-Church Development and author of the book, The Biogra phy of a Country Church, has be gun writing a weekly column for the Cleveland Times. The Cleveland Times is a bi-week- ly paper of Cleveland County with a circulation of some 4,000 and is considered as one of the best bi weeklies in North Carolina. The Rev. Hendrick’s columns in the Times will be primarily person al anecdotes illustrative of his goal of making the rural church an in dispensable part of its community. Also, for the first quarter of 1951, Rev. Hendricks has written the Sun day School lesson for the Biblical Recorder, the weekly magazine of the North Carolina Baptist Conven tion. The Recorder has a circulation of over 40,000.
