Rebecca participated in all these ac

scholastic average of 95.1 for her
four years of high school. At gradua

Rebecca received a $57 scholarship
on her Freshman year at Gardner-

on the May Court last year.
She is very active this year, too,
being devotional vice-president of
the Baptist Student Union, (respon

likes to read in her spare time and
is very fond of sports, especially
basketball.
She says, “Gardner-Webb has
meant more to me than I could say.
The fine cooperation of the stu

liness of the students is remarkable.
The Christian atmosphere of the
campus is to be held very dear.”
Rebecca hasn’t decided definitely
what she will do, but she says she
thinks she would like to work with
little children in the third, fourth,
or fifth grade in grammar school.
Regardless of what her life’s work
will be, we feel sure that she will
continue being a success.
Bill Bates and
James Garrison
Due to the late edition of The
Pilot, this month’s “big wheel” is
divided between two. Yes, its our
football co-captain, ole’ Bates and.
Garrison.
BILL BATES
Bill Bates was born in Converse,
S. C. in 1932. He attended Cowpens
High School where he was also a
wheel. There he was President of
the student council and head of va
rious organizations and missed the
Hall of Fame by only a fraction of
a point. Bill was a star athlete in
all sports and served as captain in
all of them.
After his high school days. Bill
heard of Gardner-Webb through
former students. When checking on
it, it was much to his liking.
“Every since I was just a little
boy running around barefooted I
wanted to go to college. Here I am,
and I’m glad.”
Bates with his “plain ole’ Bill”
personality has won the friendship
and admiration of everyone on this
campus. He excels in his studies,
and starred in three sports last year
and is repeating the performance
this year. “B. B.” is co-captain of
the fine ’52 squad and one of the
most valuable men, blocking and
snagging passes at all angles.
Bates says that his most enjoy-
ab'e pass times here are those mid
night “Ferdinand” (bull) sessions,
topped off with a little cheese spread
and a R. C. Cola and a Moon Pie.
Bi'l is also fond of good music, danc
ing and cute girls (a certain blonde).
Bill is looking forward to becom
ing a coach and although the next
school he will attend is uncertain,
wherever he goes G. W. can chawk
him rp as a credit and he will sure
ly succeed with his ability and per
sonality.
JAMES GARRISON
From the “crew” which came from
Thomasville, we were very fortun
ate to have James Garrison, who has
become one of the “big wheels” on
th3 Gardner-Webb campus.
.James was born in Weaverville,
N. C. As a youngster, he went to
Mills Home, where he stayed, and
later attended Thomasville High
School. Here he was an outstand
ing student, taking part in many
extra-curricular activities. He was
very active in football, basketball
nnd baseball. He was captain of both
the football and the basketball teams
his senior year in school.
Since James has been at G. W.,
he has shown all the qualities that
made him a “big wheel” on the cam
pus. His personality beams and
sparkles before everyone.
All through school James has
made outstanding grades. Here in
college he is a member of the Mar
shal Club, the Monogram Club, and
was an escort in the May Day ex
ercises.
James, or “Crazy-Legs,” as he is
more often called, is well known for
his sports ability as a football play
er. He served as co-captain of the
squad this past season. He made the
all-state team for his invinciable
rvnning attack. Also James is a
staunch member of the basketball
Jim is working forward to becom
ing an engineer and plans to at
tend N. C. State College next year.
Industriousness and a pleasant
personality have combined to make
James a sophomore who is well lik
ed by the faculty and by his class-
