BEFORE AND AFTER (Continued from Page 6) students. When Kay sees a fellow or a girl alone and looking down cast, she says to herself, “I’ll bet that one is as lonely and miserable as I was. Wonder if I could help?'’ She promptly seizes any opportun ity to smile or speak. She even makes a special effort to make op portunities to be friendly, especial ly to those whom she notices are alone a great deal. In thinking of others more, Kay has forgotten her fears and insecurities. She knows now that there are people who feel just as she felt and that it would only take a little warmth on the part of someone ?lse to bring them from within themselves. We can hardly believe that this is the same Kay we once knew. We imagine that if anyone were to 3Sk her about how to be happy as she seems to be, that she would tell him about the “before and after” Kay. Perhaps she would tell about the simple little incident, a word she would tell about how she has found out that a mere sincere ges ture can do miracles to begin a change in a personality from a downcast spirit to a spirit of con tagious joy. (We remind you that this is an observation on Anywhere College campus. Everywhere, U. S. A. We ask you, and ourselves, who knows how many “Kay-before-types” of persons there may be around us every day? Who knows which one of us may be the person who could cere word or gesture? The only way to make sure that no “Kay-before- type” remains a “Kay-before-type” ourselves. We never know what kind of an effect on anyone something we do or say might have. Don’t for get that in forgetting ourselves we help ourselves much more than we realize. Just ask Kay.) THE GREATEST By MARGARET CLEARY Bright lights sparkling like stars too large for their or bits; Vehicles, mostly Taxis, Two story busses, and Streetcars, dashing from place to place: Masses of people of every race, color, and creed, thinking only of themselves and rushing every step they take: Tall buildings scanning the skyline— Figures in the picture taken— A picture of the greatest city— New York City.
