CAMPUS "Dave" Austin Hear that chuckle? See those twinkling browa eyes? Of course, it’s David Q. Austin, GarJner-Webb’s gift from Win ston-Salem, N. C. David attended James A. Gray High School in Winston- Salem, and continued his education, during his four and one- half years in the army, at the United States Armed Forces Institute, Madison, Wisconsin. It was a lucky day for Gardner-Webb when this jolly veteran arrived last year. Since he has been at G-W, David, with his friendliness and winning personality, has shown outstanding leadership in a number of fields. Last year, he was very active in dramatics. He held a role in Measure for Measure and was technical director for the very success ful, Weep No More My Lady. In May of last year, he was initiated into the Gardner-Webb Cast of the Delta Psi Omega National Honorary Dramatics Fraternity. This year he is showing his capability by serving as Executive Editor of the Pilot, president of Decker Hall, presi dent of the I.iternational Relations Club, and a member of the College Government Association. How’s that for accom plishment? Dave’s big interest is Radio-Journalism, and hopes some day to become a foreign correspo ndent. He has already seen his share of foreign countries. Dave spent several years in Europe and has visited twelve differeat countries. If you hear any buzzing arouid Decker Hall and care to investigate, please heed this warning and wear a mask! You might get stung! It may be that David has moved one of his hives into the basement—his hobby is keeping bees. David isn’t one of those quirks who complains about food. He can eat anything, anytime, anyway—so long as it’s He says he doesn’t have much pastime, but when he does have a moment of relaxation, he spends it trying to interpret Dr. Bob Elliott’s jokes. Of course, you’ll be wondering what he thinks about girls —that’s just it, he doesn’t think! Wasn’t it a sin that cupid put that dimple in the middle of his chin? PERSONALITIES BIG WHEELS "Gin" Huggins Miss Virginia Barron Huggins of Boiling Springs, N. C. spins the “Big Wheel” on campus this month. Virginia, bet ter known as “Gin”, possesses an exceptionally pleasing personality and is ever ready with that broad smile. “Gin” has played a major role in every institution she has attended, for the extent of her capacities is prodigious. “Gin” graduated from Polkville High School where she was a member of the 4-H, Dramatics, Literary, and Glee clubs. She was parliamentarian for the F. H. A., and later elected President of the club. She was unable to serve in this post, because she speeded up her work and finished in three years. “Gin” was also a cheerleader and Chief-mar- shall at Polkville—two offices she has been elected to and served well here at Gardner-Webb. Besides being Chief-Marshall and cheerleader, “Gin” is the capable Busi.iess Manager for the Pilot, president of the Y. W. A., member of the B. S. U. Council, and church or ganist. When it comes to hobbies, “Gin” has them. Her first love is music. The instruments she likes most are the organ, piano, and violin. Incidentally, “Gin’s” introduction to the violin was through Viktors Ziedonis of Latvia, who tutored her for eighteen months. Favorite sports of hers are football, baseball, basketball, and tennis—is there another? Writing essays, bowling, fish ing, and miniature golf also find their way to her list of recreation. One of “Gin’s” desires is to travel. She would like to go to Palestine, England, Holland, Switzerland and Latvia. She also wishes she could swim—a teacher shouldn’t be hard to find! “Gin” caters to a quotation she once read, for her phil osophy of life: “One on God’s side is a majority.” People who have influenced her life greatly are: Dr. Emily Lansdell, Mr. Morrisett, Mr. Troutman Forrest Teague, and Viktors Ziedonis. Virginia’s ambition has kept her on edge for some time. She thought at first that she wanted to become a nurse later she thought of herself as a musician. But after much’delib eration “Gin” thinks she would like to settle down and be come a good little housewife. Page 5
