CLUB S The Club of the Month The Monogram Club at Gardner-Webb College is com posed ot all boys who earn letters in football, basketball and baseball—the three intercollegiate sports which the College sponsors. The club is sponsored by the Athletic Department and Coach Norman Harris is advisor to the group. Richard Yearwood is president of the club; Bunny Price is vice- president; and Gothard Overcash is secretary-treasurer. The club has a membership of approximately twenty-five boys at prosent and will add several mors at the end of the bas ketball and baseball seasons. In past years the club has besi one of the most active on the campus and was especislly prominent last year. The purpose of the club is to further good relations between Gardner-Webb and the various schools in the Carolinas Junior College Conference, the league in which college teams participate. a»id to promote the good-will and support of the stude-’t body for the athletic teams. The biggest activity with which the club is concerned right now is organization of a program to raise money to pay for the sweaters and jackets which are awarded to the lettermen. The school pays a large part of this sum, and the Monogram Club raises the rest by various means. The club has already sponsored a talent show, and at present plans are being made to provide concessions at all the home games. Miss Morgan and her cheerleaders have offered to help members of the club to sell magazine subscriptions, which promises to be a good source of income for the club. Coach Harris stated that the outlook for this year’s club is most promising. “We have a fine bunch of boys and should have a very successful year,” he said. Future Teachers of America Club The Future Teachers of America Club held its monthly meeting on November 2 i^ th° Gird'er Building. The club discussed the pro.iect of substitute teaching. The club was ?lso informed of an invitation to present a program to the American University of Women in Shelby. Mr. Dedmon i'troduc"d the pneaker. Mr. Martin, who is Principal of Mooresboro High School. Mr. Martin presented the duties of a principal of a high school. He also gave help ful hi'its to prospective teacher- concerning applying for a teaching position. Gardner-Webb Choir Under the leadership of Mr. Morrisett. eight members of the Gnrd'er Webb Choir have been privileged to represent the college at the annual Pastors’ Convention in Greensboro. The Convention was held this year in the new First Baptist Church building which was dedicated only last year. Min isters from all over the state were thrilled by its spacious beautv. The octet consisted o': Helen Gurley. Ann Banning, Gail Baucom Dslois Hamrick Jos Long, Bobby Porter, Forrest Teague and Carl Gibbs. They led the Monday night and Tuesday morning sessions in worshio singing: “Lo, Thy Shepards Hand Divine” by Josef Haydn; “Mighty Spirit” by Mozart; and “Oh. Come, Everyone That Thirsteth” from the “Eli.iah” by Mendelssohn. The octet was also invited to appear on radio and tele vision from Station WCOG in Greensboro. They were unable to schedule the television program, but they did give a fif teen minute program of sacred selections on Tuesday after- :^oon before returning to Gardner-Webb campus. Ministerial Conference The Ministerial Conference of Gardner-Webb College is overflowing with dedicated me’: G. I.’s who have heard God’s call and have given up everything so that God may use them to spread the gospel of Christ; married men who have left good paying jobs and have taken their wives and children into a new life of which they know very little about; and young men just out of high school who have heard the soft but stirring voice of Christ. They all have given up their own future dreams of what they wanted to be or were, and have taken up the cross of Christ and followed Him to Gardner-Webb College. Students of Gardner-Webb, we ask not your praise or IRC Interviews College Government.. At the Nov. 11th meeting of the International Relations Club, Ray Crawford interviewed members of the College Government. The panel was made up of the following offi cers of the College Government elected in 1952-53 by the stu- de.it body of Gardner-Webb College: president. Bob Estes; vice-president, Gail Baucom; secretary-treasurer, Doris It was a very informative meeting in which the function of the Gardner-Webb College Government was discussed. Some of the facts brought out in the discussion were: “The Gardner-Webb College Government Association is the official representative body of the students. Every stu dent becomes a member of this organization when he enrolls at G. W. “Officers are chosen from the students, and the primary and sole purpose is to serve students. A president, the most responsible student officer on the campus, is elected in the spring, along with other officers. “Three main divisions comprise the Gardner-Webb Col lege Government Association. The Legislative Body formu lates policy, rules, regulations and laws which are necessary and proper for the government; the Judicial Body deals with all cases of discipline; the House Councils determine policies affecting the respective residence halls.” On November 16, the I. R. C. presented the chapel pro gram. The program was presented to illustrate Parliament ary Procedure. The student body enjoyed this informative program very much. Young Woman's Auxiliary The Young Woman’s Auxiliary sponsored the Chapel pro gram for Wednesday, October 21. The speaker for the oeca- pion was Miss Irene Chambers, a member of the Southern ’baptist Home Mission Board, Miss Chambers gave the stu- ts an account of her duties on the Board, At the regular meeting of the Y, W, A,’s on Tuesday. October 23, Miss Marie Epley, State Young People’s secre tary related experiences of a South American tour she made this summer. She pointed out the important needs of mission fields there. As a community project this month the girls gave a party for Cora Lee McSwain. Cora Lee’s husband, Arthur, who was janitor here at Gardner-Webb last year, passed away this summer. Several of the Y. W. A. girls went out to her house Sunday, November 1, in the afternoon and carried her many useful gifts. Cora Lee worked in our school cafeteria u til ju-st recently.
