And a young man’s fancy turns to . . . baseball?? Anonymous On a still afternoon one can hear the crack of the willow- stick meeting the horsehide and immediately the thoughts, whatevere tehy may be, shift to America’s favorite pastime, baseball. Gardner-Webb’s ’54 edition to the game are proud posses sors of a 3-1 record. The Bulldogs, under the capable tutorage of Coach Norman Harris, who is serving for the fifth year at the helm, of the locals, successfully inaugurated the season with an impressive 13-2 decision over Spartanburg. Harold Pearson, Geddes Swofford, and Richard Bass combined their talents to limit the Spartans to 5 hits. The Baptist continued their winning ways by dropping EMI 3-2, in a CCJC affair. “Lefty” Swofford became the first G-W hurler to go the distance as he held the cadets to 4 safe ties. Pearson, strickly a “junk” ball expert, drew the starting assignment against the Pfieffer nine and surrendered only 6 bingles in gaining his second win of the season. However, he failed to go the route, having to give way to fireman Richard Bass in the last frame, Campbell brought the local’s victory string to an abrupt end at three games. The invaders from down Raleigh way belted four G-W pitchers for 11 hits and 14 runs for a 14-2 verdict. The remainder of the schedule: April 23, P. J. C. here, April 24, P. J. CONGRATULATIONS Belated congratulations to the co-captains for next year’s football team, Ronald Burns and Dean Upton, and to the ’54-’55 basketball co-captains. Bill Bovender and Bill Norris. Each of these fellows has proven himself capable for the responsibility placed upon him by his team mates with perform ances of outstanding leadership and team play this year. Ronald was a mainstay in the forward wall of the football club last fall, with his invaluable blocking and all-around de fensive play. Dean, a pile-driving fullback, was always avail able when yardage was needed. Norris, a veteran of the Korean War, was hampered at the beginning of the season because of his physical condition, but as the season progressed, he began to find the range anud became one of the teams top scorers. He led the team in rebounds and was outstanding in his de fensive play. Bovender, probably the most versitle member of the team, was equally effective in his shooting abality, ball handling, rebound strength, and all around team play. Again this column wishes to extend congratulations to the.se four most worthy athletes, who represent the best in their respective sports here at Gardner-Webb_ dash: Byerly (S 1st, Price (S) 2nd, Turner (F) 3rd; Sack Race: D.
